    Hi All,

Don't have a clue about sat nav and I'm lookin' to buy one for himself although I'm the one with no sense of direction. I've had a quick read around here and other sites. I'm not a big fan of Targa stuff and I'm just wondering if the Lidl one would be a good buy? We would only need it for Ireland and possibly the UK.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

Haven't looked at the spec of the lidl one, but you can buy the garmin 200 navi from komplett.ie for €165. Bought one a few weeks ago, am very happy with it.. it comes with a lithium-ion batter so you can walk around with it too... Also all the maps of Europe are loaded up on it.

Looks like it would cost about 108 euro delivered, possibly cheaper from the UK site.
    misco

Heres the link to the HUKD forum: http://hotukdeals.com/item/165105/looket-3-5-touchscreen-sat-nav-with/

No feedback about it yet there tho, hopefully monday morning a few people will get them, and report if Tomtom maps can be used with it.

does that mean you can also use the Speed traps software on them?

The Lidl sat nav also uses the same guts as the more expensive Garmin models. They use the Sirf Star 111 chip and NAVTEQ maps which are fully updateable online.
All in all the Lidl sat nav is a very good buy as it also has Bluetooth and FM transmitter, as well as a video viewer. It also comes with all the accessories, window mount, power adapter (as well as car charger) and carry pouch. These are all optional extras with Garmin and other well known brands where you must pay seperatley for them. But someone will come along now and say otherwise, but trust me I'm using one. (Targa PN-M4320 from Lidl)

The more i look at and use the Lidl sat nav the more I see how much of a bargain I got. It's a fine system and the Bluetooth for the phone is so much better than having a slug stuck in your ear:D

Also... I spotted them still instock in Lidl Blanchardstown SC yesterday afternoon;)

The concept of coverage isn't the same for Sat Nav. The GPS system used by Sat Nav equipment covers the entire planet, so where you have open sky, you have coverage.

Many of them have auxiliary functions such as traffic alerts, which rely on local transmitters, so you may not coverage for those functions.

I think he means how good are the maps, seamus. If they're Navteq 07 maps as someone said, I'd say they're pretty good.

Can you not update the maps to 07? It says on Becker's site that there are regular map updates from their software update service?

I'd love to know if the 07 maps is available as i'm planning on buying the becker 7926 this week!

    Lads,
Memory-C are doing the same Garmin as posted above too ... 156Euro + shipping for those that are "E-Bay"phobic.

I had one of the old ALDI Sat Nav's (Medion I think) it was good, but trust for the user interface, ease of finding address and updating points of interest etc ... go with a Garmin (or even a TomTom).

I bought this Garmin 250 and could not be happier, full maps of europe too guys ... well well worth the price.

I bought one of the Lidl units at the start of the year and it works fine...apart from the new roads...but that's only to be expected...anyway....I saw where someone said that this unit is basically the same as the Garmin thing....I'm wondering if it'd be possible to buy the garmin maps of USA and use them on the Lidl model....any thoughts ???
    Anyone really care???

    :):)

Short answer is NO! While the LIDL unit may use same or similar GPS chips to the Garmin, and the maps may both be from Navteq, you can't just buy the Garmin maps (either on CD or on SD cards) and have them run on the LIDL unit.
Anyway if you are heading to the US it will probably be cheaper to buy a basic GPS unit over there with US maps already installed. Think you can get bottom of the range/no-name brands for less than $100 if you check around. We have reached the stage, like in the PC world, where buying "software" alone costs more than the "hardware + software" package.

For an extra €20 (€119.99) you can get the Garmin Nuvi 200 in maplins. Much better unit if you ask me. I got one on saturday...

    <edit> It was Halfords sorry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,238 ✭✭✭leex

Lidl unit appears to have TeleAtlas maps which are not supposed to be as good in ireland as Navteq (as in Garmin and recent Aldi units).

Maplins don't seem to have an Irish website, maplin.ie & maplins.ie redirects to maplin.co.uk with prices in sterling. On there the 200W is listed at £139.99! And B grades at £99.99! Was it A-grade or B-grade stock you got neacy69?

I got a A-Grade Nuvi 200. It was in the store in Dundalk Retail Park
The nuvi 200w was an extra €20 (only difference is widescreen)

Its a great unit used it a few times since then and very happy with it

OK my misunderstanding, as there is no 200 on the website I thought that you had got a 200W for €120.

For anyone interested, Currys and Halfords have had the 200W in the last few weeks for €129.99, not sure if that offer is still current, but I think so.

Harvey Norman are currently advertising the 200W at a quote "Great Price" of €188! They should price match Currys or Halfords it you ask nicely!

thanks. so whats the difference between the 200 and the 250? According tp the garmin website they have the eact same features when compared. I see halfords have the 200w for £95 online but Blanchardstown isn't on the reserve and pick up list.

Halfords only offered me either the Nuvi 200 for e119.99 or the 200w (widescreen being the only difference) for an extra e30...

I cant see any difference between the 200 and the 250 from a couple of quick google searches...but I'm no expert on sat-nav's

It's not very clear from the compare function on the Garmin website but the 200 and 200W has UK & Ireland maps only, the 250 has full European maps.
