A couple of things bug me about the junction.

Coming from Tallaght on the Belgard road, during any time of reasonably heavy traffic the line to turn left down the Naas road towards Naas is backed right back up the road in the bus lane, sometimes as far back as the Belgard. Does anyone know why the left filter only goes green for the same length of time as the straight light plus a min or so before? Why not at least have a flashing amber whille the other 3 sides are taking right turns?

As well as that theres a long way to the next turnoff so why is there not a long merging lane at the left turn and just have a yield? the traffic could constantly flow . I dont see why it would be any different to a motorway on ramp?(I'm open to correction)
I'd say it would reduce the traffic going straight on into Clondalkin too asa good few people going to the top end of Clondalkin would take the now much better flowing left turn and take the flyover at the turn into citywest and take the new road down into the top of Clondalkin, thus reducing the que of cars going straight on.

2nd one is probably not a runner but I'd say there is space to do something. Could they not raise either the Naas road or the Belgard road to eliminate the signal controlled junction (or at the very least make it so it stops traffic less and only needs to for right turning)

Definitely scope to improve the left movement there alright but typical lethargy reigns and things like the bus stop would prevent them doing anything so simple.

Extending the merge with an additional jersey barrier to prevent mergers moving out to early and colliding with U-turners would make traffic flow much better there.

Was thinking about the bus stop and it probably wouldnt be a huge issue to move it back to before the junction?

You'd think so, but this is Ireland and bus stops require planning permission IIRC so it's not a simple matter of picking it up and moving it.

Newlands X is to be grade separated in the next couple of years. The N7 will overpass Belgard Rd I believe.

€60 for driving in a bus lane , you'd probably save that in petrol

what really gets me is that ambulances and fire engines get delayed by minutes there and in some cases go down the wrong side of the carrige way. in such cases minutes do mean lives and that delay has been going on for years.

It also delays cyclists and buses too, adds 10-15 minutes to buses.

99% of those in that lane don't know how to use the acceleration lane on the Nass road either , as they pull straight out in to the next lane or even the middle lane. Yes there is an acceleration / merging lane and yes if irish drivers wern't selfish morons then you could put a flashing amber there through all cycles only overriden by the pedistrian crossing.

SDCC are doing the newcastle road junction at the moment BTW

The NRAs list of schemes to begin this year includes the Newlands X grade seperation. Due to them having to bridge the N7 over it + build very long frontage roads/sliproads to get people on/off as well as maintain access to Newlands Renault, Joels, the Louis Fitzgerald, etc, I can see the scheme taking a painfully long time to build and with much longer delays while being built.

Thankfully I'm changing jobs away from needing to take it every day..

We seriously need bus lane cameras in this country.

    Don't buses have cameras ?
Aren't there already cameras at junctions ?

Main problem is that by not enforcing the rules, poor and illegal driver behaviour is reinforced and rewarded.

The bus lanes on the N11 are rarely full of cars because drivers get pulled over. The Belgard Road bus lanes usually has more cars than the other lanes..

The last time I drove along that stretch of road there were "bus lane not in use" signs up, how long has it been open?

Ever since my firm moved to Tallaght - May 07 - its been officially open. Rarely has less than a solid line from CRH to the junction at peak times - and yes, its usually the busiest lane!

One day when the lights were broken it was being treated as a flashing orange by the guards on points duty except when the N7 outbound was in flow - and the queue was miniscule, about three cars when I arrived compared to massive backlogs in the main driving lanes.
