I'd be interesting in hearing anyones opinion on this phone aswell. I see it Sim free on Pixmania for €110.
The JCB phone is €300 in carphonewarehouse.ie

Are there any other dust/shock proof phones out there?

If durability is the main concern you could always ebay an Ericsson R310 "Sharkfin" - these were the ultimate tough phone. To show off, I dumped mine in a pint and then had the lads play football with it. It was nicknamed "the bayonet" by my friends. Truely retro and probably one of the toughest handsets going. Software was buggy as hell on mine though and I eventually got an R520 instead, one of the first handsets with GPRS!

The "JCB Phone" as sold by the carphonewarehouse is actually just a rebranded Sonim XP1 so if you search for that you'll get plenty of reviews. These are generally positive although one particular site did manage to do damage to one. I'd love to take the one in work and submit it to trial with me on an expedition during the summer but we don't get demo's

The samsung seems a reasonable compromise though, offering modern features combined with above average durability. Also coming this summer is the Sony Ericsson C702 which I'm keeping an eyeball on. I am due an upgrade at the end of this month but would consider forking out for a sim free one. Promises water and shock resistance, 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and GPS. Drool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The screen is not too small. If the battery lasted half as long as they claim I'd be impressed, I'll have to wait and see. The phone is BOG standard, no frills. The ringtones are awful and I only had success recieving a small mp3 from my old phone, not sure why, the phone doesn't have a memory card slot and only has less than 2mb internal. It is tough though, I'll be knocking the crap out of it for sure. My last phone was the Nokia 5500 sport. The features on that were brilliant, tap it and it reads out your new text message etc but the case was really poorly made. The new Samsung looks a lot better build but due to the long life of the battery the features are stripped down to bare minimum.
    9/10 for build
    2/10 for features..
