Laptop power problem

I'm having a problem with my laptop. I have it plugged in with an AC adaptor yet sometimes it shows up as running on the battery. I have to tweak the adaptor cord at the back where it connects to the laptop until the mains icon shows up. Sometimes it'll even make a shrill noise until I touch it.

I thought it was a faulty ac apaptor and purchased a new one but the problem persists even with this new adaptor. Anyone got any advice? I'm in Limerick, anybody know any good repair specialists? Thanks for any help...I'm worried.

It sounds like the connection for the ac adapter hole (can't think of a better name for it) to the motherboard is loose. Unfortunately the only way to properly fix it is to get a new motherboard but that will be quite expensive and probably not worth it. Some people have had some success soldering the connection back in place and then encasing the connection in glue (I think) as this insulates the connection.

Chances are that won't fix it fully but it may help it and may delay the inevitable.

  • thanks for the reply..sounds like my laptop's days are numbered :(

    hi Linda Scarce Grindstone,

first post but i'm a long time reader of boards.ie, just i never had anything useful to post before, so here goes:

check out micro ireland on thomas street in limerick city, i had the same problem as yourself with my five year old toshiba laptop last year, seems the little pin in the a/c connection had broken off. i took it into them and they soldered a new power connector on to the motherboard for €200. fantastic bunch of guys and top notch speedy service, left the laptop in on saturday and they called me to collect it on the thursday! :)

just wanted to add that i'm actually typing this post on a HP laptop i bought last year when vista came out (€1800 in harvey normans), which you might consider more cost effective, i just wanted the old one repaired for sentimental value and now my 3yr old uses it (although he's more fond of browsing fisher-price and cbeebies than boards, lol). also check out the acer laptops in soundstore on the ballysimon road, (€just before xmas i bought two @ €650 a piece). em, at the risk of being accused of shilling i should probably disclose that i work in dell, nothing wrong with their laptops functionally speaking, i just dont like their designs, hp just look more stylish in my opinion, and toshiba are a bit pricey, but they're a real workhorse! :)
