My first LOI game tonight. Horrible conditions - very wet and poor light. But, here's two images - ISO was 1600 or 2000, and speeds as low as 1/500, so noise is to be expected, mixed with the rain.

But, it was an interesting experience, and I'll go back again on the 18th, better prepared.

No mother's were taking photos pitch-side, just in case people wanted to know. :D Only 4 other photographers (or is that people who take photographs??).

A few nice ones in your stream Paul. Was at Monaghan/Athlone tonight, but gave up at HT due to the light!! At least we won! :D

First one's good paul...and the timings good on the second.
I like one of the others on you stream too...good stuff!

    First one is good, Paulw.
The tabloids would settle for a few shots like that.

The second one is never going to be printed!
    Were you standing up?

Don't be afraid to drop the shutter speed, in bad light.
Get the players running at you & you'll get away with speeds as slow as 1/200

At least now you know how difficult the eLoI can be. :-)

I'll have a look through your stream now.

No. 1 & No. 6 on your site are good.
I still think you'd get a better angle, if you were sitting on the pitch.

Yeah, normally I prefer sitting. But, I was totally soaked and needed to stretch my legs. And of course, when I did that, the good action came my way.

But, I'll be much better prepared next time. I just have to get used to those lights. Not the worst I've shot under, but certainly not the best. I'm looking forward to those long summer nights and some natural light.

For the papers, I would have enough images. The 2nd certainly wouldn't be a submission image, but just one I liked. He didn't actually score from that. It was inches wide.

Number 1 is good but would've been better if the defenders face wasn't blocked by the hand but still it's a good capture anyway. Last night I got the first half in decent enough natural light then in the second half it was dark so I ended up battling with the elements.

Edit: Oh yeah we are top of the league!!!

    first one is good Paul
    big crop i'm guessing?
would you consider running it through neat image or noise ninja to clean it up a little :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

    Yeah, a fairly big crop.

As for noise - it's a combination of noise and rain. It was heavy enough rain at that point.

Besides, what's wrong with a little noise in a floodlit image?

Nothing wrong with a bit of noise, in an image like that.
    You almost expect it.
Not like you'll be printing off posters, or anything.

Exactly...especially under bad weather conditions aswell

Paul, you are no longer a LOI virgin, and you can expect lighting like that at all grounds, maybe Dalymount excepted.

Good pics in the stream and as City Exile said, try get the players coming at you.

Was at Pat's V Derry last night, gave up at half time as was totally soaked.

Here's a few to illustrate the rain.

The rain last night was horrible. It was so bad that even the ball boys took cover, so the players had to go get it themselves. And Morten Stadium has a nice running track around it, so the players got plenty of exercise.

I think I was the only photographer to sit out in it for the whole game. I was determined to get some decent shots for my efforts.

Next game (18th Apr), I'll be much better prepared and at least I know the venue better now. Of course, that game is against Bohs, so should be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Not Bohs Paul, Shels. They are just another First Division team now, so don't be expecting too much! Although Shamrock Rovers, St. Pats, Bray and Drogheda are all at home that weekend.

Sorry, you're right. I'll have to get to know the clubs and even the team players. It'll just take me some time.

Gives me something to do until the rugby season starts up again. Only a few more games for Leinster.

That was probably the first LOI game I've been at in a number of years. Used to go frequently with my dad (to Shamrock Rovers games) until they left Milltown, and began their travells.

Did go to the odd game in the late 90s, with my brother, to watch Drogheda Utd since he didn't live too far from the grounds.

So, last night was an experience.

Maybe after the next game, I'll post some photos, and give a match report. :D Last night had 3 yellow cards, 1 red card, 2 goals ... and was WET.

I know you said it was only to show the conditions, but nice shot thimblefull, you can feel the damp! Great pained expression in there too, and the colours are beautifully vivid.

I admire photographers who rather than complaining about the conditions set about capturing them, that's what photography is about, isn't it? :)

Just looked up his older stuff, quite superb. Now here's a sports photographer who knows his craft. I hope you make a good living from it, you deserve to - as good as/better than most of the photographers I have ever commissioned.

These are two pictures printed in the Evening Echo, in Cork today.
Unlike Paulw, I had decent light to work with.
Had to cover two games yesterday afternoon.

    FAI Intermediate Cup Semi Final
    Wayside Celtic 0-0 Rockmount

I guess we all got a little bit wet with our sports photography this weekend.

Thankfully the camera had it's rain jacket on. Speaking of which, my new sportshield is due any day now. Then I'll be even more prepared for the next game.

Maybe a little hide or tent would be useful, to keep dry and keep the gear dry too? Hmm. Plenty of space at some stadia for that.

Back in our old ground, we used to have a spare dugout for photographers to sit in to, was dead handy.
