So i asked on IRC first, before realiing that was a stupid place to ask and I'd probably just get flamed to ****. So I'll give hear a try!

09:41 <Truckle> i have a hard drive attached to my comouter
09:41 <Truckle> which used to be an external hdd
09:41 <Truckle> but it stopped working
09:42 <Truckle> so I took the hdd out of the csing and attached it to my PC via IDE
09:42 <Truckle> its showing up in windows but when i try to open it in My Computer, it just tells me the drive is not formatted
09:42 <Truckle> anybody know of a good piece of software that I can use to try and get the data off it?
09:42 <Truckle> I dont give a sod about the drive, but i need the data

Its probably also worth mentionaing that when I try to get data off it when it is in the USB enclosure, it says I/O error. When i try to get data off it through IDE, it tells me it is not formatted. It always shows up in my computer though.

The data is really important, and I'm willing to pay for almost any software to get it back. (Although the cheaper the better obviously!)

Edit: I looked at the disk in management tools in windows and it says the disk is fine, but empty and unformatted.

have you tried booting with a linux live cd to see if you can retrieve the data that way? I've used always have a copy of knoppix lying around for that purpose.

    Try http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
You probably need to restore the partition. I've had the same problem with my external hd a few times where it appears to be unformatted. I think it's from disconnecting it or switching it off at a bad time? TestDisk fixed it every time anyway.
