does anybody know of any music festivals in the eastern half of america...??

im going to be in New York from mid June (just after bonnaroo unfortunately) til the end of October and so will be missing out on EP and other similar European festivals.

it seems every festival i find has no camping (such as lollapalooza) and i find that to be one of the vital parts of a festival. (as well as the music obviously)

the kind of bands id like to see would be flaming lips, modest mouse, the strokes, muse, yeah yeah yeahs, devendra banhart etc etc. i know out of those few that only the flaming lips are playing for certain this summer but its that sort of music im looking for of you know what i mean.

so if anyone has been to any festivals around the US that they think might be sort of what im looking for tell me please!!

    thanks!!!:D

COACHELLA in Palm Springs - I've always wanted to go there.

    http://www.coachella.com/

You can't camp onsite but there're offering free buses to people that camp in LA..

    FREE TRAIN SERVICE WILL TRANSPORT
    SELECT FESTIVAL CAMPERS FROM
LOS ANGELES' UNION STATION TO EMPIRE POLO FIELD
    AND BACK

This year's COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL will feature a new and improved way for festival-goers to reach their destination.

Goldenvoice can now confirm details of the new venture with festival sponsor AMTRAK to create the "Coachella Express." This one-of-a kind train will transport campers from Los Angeles to the Empire Polo Field and back for this year's COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL set for Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27. COACHELLA, Amtrak and the city of Indio are working together to create a temporary train platform in Indio; from there concert-goers will be transported via shuttle buses to and from the camping check-in area at the polo field and the temporary station.

"Coachella Express" is FREE of charge and is open to anyone with a camping & festival ticket. Reservations can ONLY be made at www.coachella.com and will be on a first-come, first-served basis effective immediately.

The train will depart Los Angeles' historic Union Station Thursday, April 24 at 1:30 PM and will return to Los Angeles, leaving Indio Monday, April 28 at 10:30 AM.

"We're always looking for ways to improve the Coachella weekend," says Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice. "And this collaboration with Amtrak and the city of Indio is one in an ongoing plan to make a fan's trip easier. This is a priority for us not only for Coachella but all our festivals."

I was at Coachella in 06. Possibly the most overrrated festival on the planet. A huge proportion of folks stay in their aircon'd campervans (its really hot) so theres f-all atmosphere around the site at night. Also, if you're like me and enjoy a nice few beers at these things, not only can you not bring in your own booze(or foldup chair!), you can only drink in 2 specific fenced off areas with no view of the main stages. At the exit of these areas they have security guards who stop you bringing out your beer. An unbelievably disappointing weekend after flying all the way from Ireland.

I wouldnt be too worried about staying in the Eastern side of the US, domestic flights are quite cheap.

In 05 I went to the Sasquatch festival in Washington (State), which altho it was no glasto (only 1 main and 2 small stages), it was a very good weekend all in all. That had a full campsite.

I havent been to SXSW but I've been in Austin before for abut a month and its a great spot. Its not a festival site per say so no camping, all the gigs are in venues around town, but I'd say thats a great week. Its a very compact city, and every Fri and Saturday 6th St is closed off to traffic so everyone can basically get locked and hop from bar to bar, a mad place. The lineup is always fantastic and tickets are cheap, and some of the venues, like EMO's, are top class - like Whelans without the overcrowding.
