Netopia 2247NWG as wireless access point with PermaNet Cable Modem?

I have a lovely fast Permanet connection that I want to make wireless using a Netopia 2247 NWG Gateway. The Permanet is cable but the Netopia is DSL. I can run a signal through it to my Dell XPS M1530 no problem using an Ethernet cable and it works fine the same way on my Mac workstation, but when I try to go wireless the wifi catcher on the laptop says the signal is excellent but "limited" and indicates that the DSL is the problem when I go into the Netopia trouble shooter.

Heres how I've been doing it. The signal comes into the house on a co-axial cable into the back of the supplied PermaNet Arris Cable mac modem. I take it to the Netopia via Ethernet cable. There are 3 more ethernet ports which work fine to take a cable connection. It just doesnt work as a wireless access point. The DSL light flashes when it should be solid and the internet light has never come on even when using it perfectly well with ethernet cables.

I have no networking experience and I'm baffled. I've heard the Netopia can be converted to work as a wireless bridge. Is this what I need to do? and is it true that it leaves my network open for anyone else who wants to have a nose around or surf using my connection wirelessly?

    Please help.

If your using the netopia router for DHCP it will set the default gateway and nameservers to its self, you will have to manually set them to point to the cable modem instead.
