Brussells- advice on nearby cities to go to

I'm visiting a friend in Brussels, I was wondering if there are any surrounding cities i should make a atrip to Ostend and Bruges is on the cards...anywhere else anyone would recommend for a day trip? Or should I fly into a different city and then travel down to Brussels?

bruges is a must, and amsterdam is not far at all either

Lots of good places to visit from Brussels. I'm not sold on Ostend, though. Most people would suggest Bruges. I would add Ghent (which I prefer to Bruges) and Antwerp. If you have plenty of time, you could also consider Ypres if WW1 interests you, and Louvain.

The Belgian rail service is superb.
