    Hey

I've been having a quick look at the various different social networking APIs. This is pretty basic but I have not been able to find the answer and was hoping that someone here knew if it was possible to write an application that resides on an external site.

For example on my blog could I write a widget that displays the comments on my facebook profile (bebo or whatever)

    Thanks

You can do it the other way around quite easily, but I am not sure if you can do it the way you are talking about.

There is a facebook api so I'm sure they have a developers site to go with it.

Maybe OpenSocial allows you to do this kind of thing? http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/

Had a brief look a few months ago at the facebook API. Most of the documentation exists in a Wiki format and I found it time consuming to discover which features were available in the various versions of the API. The best source of information was definitely in the forum.

With Facebook basically the main modus operandi of applications is to run in an iframe within the Facebook site and in gneral the flow of information would be inward rather than out. I have however seen at least one iGoogle widget that displays various information from a facebook account so this may be a good place to start your search on the facebook front.

Yen exts there are API's which will allow external sites to plug into Social Network Gateways.
