This is going to be very difficult if not impossible to achieve, but here goes...

I had a tape of mellow electronic tracks around the time of between 1995 to 1997 that a workmate had made up for me (but never gave me a track listing). The tape got mangled up in my car stereo a few years back.

The only one I've ever been able to identify was Water From A Vine Leaf by William Orbit, which I've subsequentally bought.

My sister who knew a little bit at the time said there was also Jam & Spoon, The Orb & Aphex Twin on there.

What I'd like to know is if there's a site or forum on the www where I could listen to tracks by these kind of artists to hopefully find the tracks that I loved on that tape, and hopefully more.

I've no i-Pod, but I'm guessing that i-Tunes (or any mp3 download site) might be a place to start, but I was hoping to find something where it's dominantly or specifically ambient?

If it helps, there was one track that had a great groove with real drums & bass, electric rhythm guitar and a sitar doing the main melody.

The sound I'm liking most are pieces like Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb, Water From A Vine Leaf, and Pulsewidth by Aphex Twin.

Any replies gratefully appreciated.

Maybe try Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works as theres a couple of really great tracks there plus it would've been out from round 1991/1992 time. Jam & Spoon track's maybe called "Stella"????.

I checked out Stella on youtube - didn't find the exact version, but the main synth part is definitely very similar if not the same. There was no vocal on this track and the ryhthm was slower.

I have Selected Ambient Works 85-92, and none of the tracks on there were on the tape, though I do really like Pulsewidth.

Some nice stuff on the FSOL album, going from the clips.

www.last.fm is worth joining too - it tracks the music you listen to and recommends others. There are loads of sound clips which in some cases are the full track and even an option to download the track free sometimes.

but it sounds remarkably like a compilation which came out in '95 called Techno Nights, Ambient Dawn: http://www.discogs.com/release/123528
It was a round up of well-known dance / ambient artists of the day, and was great for in-car listening. Hmm.. The cover design was pretty dire!

Judging by the tracks you've mentioned, you should check out:

Orbital - especially the Brown album and also Diversions - an EP they released in the US the same year, with 6 extended mixes.

The Orb - Adventures beyond the Ultraworld & Aunty Aubrey's Adventures Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Vol 1

FSOL - Lifeforms (ambient), Dead Cities (ambient/industrial) maybe Accelerator (early 90's techno); Amorphous Androdynous - Tales of Ephidrina (similar vein to Lifeforms).

I'd also go onto Warp Records website and check out demos of:

The Black Dog - (Bytes), Parallel & Spanners.

Aphex Twin - Donkey Rhubarb & On singles, Richard D James album
Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves

(Artificial Intelligence I & II - Various
and maybe some early Autechre - Incunabula and Tri Repetae.

Less well known Warp artist B12 - Time Tourist is also quite mellow (this album may have been deleted by now).
