Ring Beam - Steel or Concrete?

    Good morning all,

I am building an extension onto my bungalow.

It is a 35m2 sunroom on the gable end of the exiting structure. It will be stepped in 450mm from the front and rear walls as will the roof.

The extension is in red. The wall on the right ( 14' running // to the house) will be glass and I will need a beam above it to support the roof.

The roof itself will be apex /\ with hips at the hex end.

The roof will will have no ceiling joists, just rafters coming from the wall plate to the ridge beam.

I have seen loads of houses built with rooms/extensions like this, how do people support the roof without trusses?

My idea to stop the walls/roof spreading will be to install a ring beam that will be tied into the extiting house.

Q1 - Is the ring beam required?

Q2 - Has anyone experiance of this?

Q3 - As there will be steel over the glass wall, should I use steel for the complete ring beam?

    Cheers,
    Mick

it is done by ordering pre fabricated steel lintols with posts

if you google you will find , that would be the "keystone" of my advice

    Thanks for the quick response.

I've tried google, not much info out there or more than likely I didn't put enough info in!

Do you need the posts if the beam is going to be place onto the top of the block work?

Other options that have been suggested is the use of U blocks, concrete and rebar to form the ring beam and cat the stell beam over the glass wall into the U block to form one structure the complete way around the extension.

    Cheers,
    Mick

Sinnerboy's advice is god place to start here.

As for a roof without trusses or joists, it is down to span.
Rafters only can span short distances, above that a collar needs to be introduced,
above that rafters and joists and above that full cut roof.
In your situation you would likely be looking at a collared roof

Just in case the OP is googling "lintols" it might be easier just to provide this link
