Ferry to France

Thinking of driving a van to France. What's the best (and cheapest) ferry? I've been looking at the websites of Stena Line, Celtic Line and Irish Ferries (one kludgier than the next - God, they're awful sites), and am having a little trouble.

I manage to go right through the endless process of setting up a sailing, then discover it's going to cost €500. I manage to go through another and get a mysterious message saying the 'vehicle price' can't be ascertained. There's no section for vehicle price!

Does anyone actually travel on these ferries, and if so, how?

I don't particularly want to travel with these slavers, by the way, but it's the only way to get a van to France.
