Canon 400D - Pricing Query for the experts

    Hi folks,

I was thinking of getting a 400D as a beginner's camera in the world of DSLRs. I saw some excelent shots taken with it and was very impressed. I noticed the 450D is due to be released in the next few weeks and I was wondering:

    1. Will the price of the 400D drop significantly as a result?

    2. Will the 400D be discontinued or become harder to get once the 450D is released and if so, how long will this take?

At the moment the 400D costs €450 from Kea (with the possibility of getting caught for VAT at the door or later on) or €482.50 (with Vat and delivery and using the €60 cashback offer) from Komplett.

I don't fancy paying €600+ for a camera, especially when it'll be my first DSLR.

    Any opinions are welcome.

    thanks,

    Ken

The 450d isnt a replacement for the 400d.

If you check out pixmania you can see the relative pricing on these cameras,

    Currently
the 450d is €733 for body only and €960 with 18-55 kit lens.
    the 400d is €599 and €659
the 350 d is €485, only available with the 18-55 kit lens.

As the 350d is still available i doubt there'll be any problem getting the 400d for a while.

The price will go down, but to see a big difference you need to wait at least 6 months for now they put similar prices for people start to get the 450D and when the camera will be good and stable in the market the price of the 400D will drop a bit more...

But if you are buying a camera now i would go for the 450D...

got mine on komplett.ie for 575 with the 18-55mm lens about 3 months ago. i believe its now down to about 530 ish on komplett. i would go for that. you will not get stung for taxes or anything when using komplett, and they are very good for accepting returns and what not.

i returned a lens after a week that i did not want, and although i had to pay postage of 9 euros, they were quick to refund the cost of the lens to me.

the ebay company seem to get a good rep here on boards, but I try to steer clear of ebay for large purchases such as this because you can get stung for tax easily ( happened twice to me) and also if it turns out to be a lemon it can be quite difficult and lenghtly process to get your camera fixed/replaced.

Tekmo say they only deliver to the UK... did you email them to get delivery to Ireland or what?

I also got mine(400d) from tekmo but in the last week or so they no longer advertise free delivery to ireland.

I ordered a 50mm 1.8 from them 3 weeks ago and it cost €71 with free delivery, but nopw noticed the free delivery is no longer advertised

I don't think it should be seen as getting 'caught' or getting away with it...lads it's our duty to pay customs tax on stuff so can we just grow up and accept the fact that we must pay our taxes as required by the law.

In the same breath these people who 'get away' without paying customs will crib about something like the health service or roads etc...things that need money from taxation in order to function properly...

sorry for the rant but let's cop on about the customs thing.

what a ridiculous analogy, i'm sure all GTA game players turn out to be criminals aswell. A consumer always wants to pay low, which why they shop online, ridiculous custom charges make these 'low' prices the same as rip off ireland ones. Besides no ones trying to evade customs, their just going for retailers that have a reputation of not always getting caught by customs. They send the packages by same means as other retailers so theres nothing illegal going on here.

The point is that if you feel custom charges are wrong you should go about changing it legally, not by simply side-stepping it. Similarly if I feel that a certain part of the road's speed limit is too low I do not have the right to decide to go 30-40km/h faster because I feel like it's more "fair" or that the German's can do those speeds on their autobahns.

And certainly, if I do speed/drink and drive/evade customs I wouldn't be posting all about it on the internet.

A wise person once said - it's not a crime if you don't get caught... tax evasion is a crime but on such small scales is often ignored by the State. It doesn't make it any less of a crime.

Maybe they should delete KeaPhoto off the boards 'suggested' sellers list as they clearly state they will 100% 'evade' custom charges.
I dont have any urges to change the system over one purchase, thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

I believe they only make that guarantee in relation to UK purchasers - and it operates that they refund you the VAT paid rather than you "evading" the charge. I haven't bought from them so I'm just going on what I've heard from posters here.

i think youre thinking about digitalrev which everyone complains about , even though they have more and better deals. Anyway this topic is on thin ice so back on track, i would recommend the seller gets the camera from where he see's fit and that i would predict no sudden shortages of the 400d

Has anyone ever bought stuff from Jessop online? How are they like?

The 400D with lens kit works out at £350 after cashback excluding delivery (around £9). That's about €450 although you have to ring them to place the order manually for delivery to Irish addresses.

I purchased a Canon 30D from Jessops online last year and was very happy.

I ordered other bits and pieces too and delivery was quick too.

Never had to call them though just ordered via web.
