Is there a problem with the availability of cheaper alcohol?

What's the problem if it's consumed in moderation?

Yes, cheaper alcohol is bad because the customer should be taxed to the hilt. That's the way it is.

I voted for the the cheaper but in moderation option.

When I'm away in Europe and a litre of Jameson is 15 -17 euro - it does'nt mean I drink more of it !

Sickens me that it's all made in Cork and costs less everywhere (I've been) in Europe than here at home :(:(

I sense a little bit of bias in the way the question has been phrased.

FWIW, I don't think cheap alcohol is the problem. People getting langered and being ****wits is the problem. Most of the ones you seeing falling about the streets haven't been drinking cheap alcohol at all, but rather the expensive stuff dished out by the ever-gouging licensed trade.

Upping the price wont change a thing. We'll still go out and get langered and just spend less money on food;)

the bon viveur student in me is all for cheaper alcohol, but of course i can see the problems straight away, i'd rarely drink more than anyone should. but i could see some of the lads i know going hog wild if the price was to drop tomorrow

    Exactly.

Which is why I don't see a problem with an off-licence or supermarket doing their 24 Bottles For €24 offer.

it's a cultural problem not an economic one

we should be focussing on trying to alter our drinking culture rather than listening to the nonsensical bleating of the licenced vintners (who have been doing very well out of pouring the stuff into their customers for decades and then pouring them out the door and into their cars :()

Guildofevil brought my attention to this graph, which shows that countries which have pursued legal restrictions on alcohol price and availability (Ireland, UK, Norway) have seen increases in consumption since 1970, whereas the liberal ones (France, Italy, Germany) have seen decreases. The figures for France and Italy are especially dramatic.

Make alcohol more expensive and harder to get and people drink more.

That's exactly it lads & I am glad you all agree. Tell the vinters to stop whining - if they want more custom they know what to do.

Right....I'm off to open a fresh 24 pack, see ye later;)

Or better yet, don't buy alcohol if you think it costs too much.

Well no. Don't stop buying it altogether, instead choose WHERE you decide to buy it. Alcohol is no different to anything else, shop around and get the best deal;)

Sorry, yes, that's what I meant.

You won't find me drinking in Elem's nightclub, for instance.
