Wiring a garage

I've recently had a garage built 40 meters from the house and want to run an electrical supply from the house MCB board to a mini MCB board which I'll split for lights and sockets circuits. I'm thinking a 30amp trip switch in the house and a 16sq.mm cable to feed the MCB board in the garage. 50 meters of ducting has been buried so I was expecting that I won't need arnoured cable. Any advice would be appreciated on the cable type that would suit to cover this distance.

if the underground cable is going to be in constant contact with water I advise using SWA cable, not for its mechanical protection, but for its suitability in wet conditions.

As stoner has said you will need 16sq SWA leaving a bit extra on your measurement. Better looking at it than for it ;)
Make sure you also get a gland kit too and to earth the outercore (the wire armour) of the cable at both ends.

Since you are installing a sub board, put in a 32amp neozed switchfuse feeding the sub-board in your main-board.

Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate this.

There is actually 40mtrs of underground ducting so 50 should cover the distance from board to board without need for joins. One question of Sparky-s, given the link provided by ircoha, I think 10sq. SWA cable would be okay as it can handle up to 9KW load (approx.) over that distance. If I put a 32amp circuit breaker into the main board it has a max load of 7KW at 100% load so 10sq should be heavy enough I think.

You should be safe enough with 10sq actually.

I am also about to wire a garage, just wondering what is the most basic consumer unit.
It would need two MCB's one 5A for lights & one 13A for power (nothing special just the usual diy tools etc)and an RCD.

Does anyone sell them as basic kits or is it better to buy parts seperatly and assemble it myself.

dolan baker, just buy an 8 way board to give plenty of room to work in and room for future improvements.
In the board use a 6A MCB for lights and 20A RCBO for sockets.
Get a small bit of busbar too if your wholesaler will cut it for you, rather than linking them with tails.
