Just had random thought pop into my head last night for no reason at all. As I do with most random thoughts I put it up in AH to get to the truth so here it is....

Was Hitler the only one with that toothbrush moustache? Did he come up with it or just make it famous? I cannot picture anyone in History before or after Hitler that sported such a moustache.... Was he the first and only???

Random I know but sure thats what AH is! :D

Charlie Chaplin was about before Hitler, i think. he was definately refrenced in Blackadder goes Forth, and that was set during WWI wasn't it?

From what I've heard (seriously, no joke), Hitler grew that moustache, after seeing how much people admired Charlie Chaplin.
He wanted to be seen as a man of the people.

Judging by the sheer number of cats with this "hitler moustache", I think it's safe to assume he just took it from one of those cats.

But after doing a google search it seems he wasn't the only one. Charlie Chaplain had one and in fact there's a whole wikipedia article here about this subject.

Well he did try to be an artist. Failed. And proceeded to have that same art school burnt down.

And oddly enough, it seems he was a bit of the comedian. See here

Don't forget this chap on the right.

They should bring this back into fashion, along with the pencil mustache, as so.

Seeing as this guy had anger problems I'd imagine he was pretty pissed off! :D

Yep could be that or could be the fact he rules over a country with the worlds highest inflation and lowest life expectancy!

Personally I agree with you. Who'd want him representing you?

Haha I'd say so alright! :D Is it fair to say Hitler has destroyed that moustache in the sense you can never sport one without causing offence!

Imagine if Tom Selleck had been a Nazi...!? ;)

Bang on the money. Adolf was also a popular name before WWII and fairly rare now. Same reason there's so many people called John Paul around 28 years old. The swastika is actually a Christian cross AFAIK but has understandably fallen by the wayside because of its associations.

I think it was a hindu symbol and was later adopted by most other religions.

edit: actually, checking wikipedia, it says that it was a neolithic symbol. Feckin' facist cavemen!!!

Wasn't it that hitler idolised Chaplin and that's why he had it?

From a sitcom in the 70's called on the buses. Cracking tash.
There's a beer in india called swaztika. Nice beer and a boldly emblazoned swastika across it. And of course there was the Swastika laundry company that worked the hotels in dublin years back

Well I know Windsock is very fond of that particular moustache style... but she doesn't seem to like it when I post up photos of her wearing it.

Hitler adopted his trademark moustache after one of his frequent trips into the future to see 70's synthpop band Sparks. He was a big fan by all accounts.

I just found out today that there was a Paddy Hitler, the nephew of a certain Adolph. Maybe he had one too.
