It would appear that the new version of CS4 when it comes out will be 64bit but only available in the first instance as a Windoz version. Mac to follow on at some point.

Oh the joys of adding tons more RAM.

    Story here

thats fine by me, it'll give me time to save up for the 40 megapixel camera(Nikon D7) that may need 64bit processing. :)

Lightroom 2 is 64bit, I wonder what the differnce is?

64-bits operating systems don't have the limit of 4 gb of ram of 32-bit OS
(4gb of which windows only sees 3.3gb)

I don't know what's the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit "applications", it may be just a matter of pushing everybody onto 64-bit OS and by gigabites of ram by the dozen

    thanks quilmore.

i do know what 64 bit means.....at very basic level anyway.

But, what I'm wondering is why are they able to introduce 64bit for mac in Lightroom, but not Photoshop?

Probably a priority to do Windows first, since there are more potential customers. Mostly a marketing thing, rather than a technical issue, I'd say. Most companies would develop Windows apps first, and mac second, unless they're a mac/Apple provider.

    Hi Paul

I'm not to sure about that. I think Adobe understands most of it's market (paying market that is) is apple users. I've been using PS on a mac since version 3 (8 bit baby) and as far as I know they've never split a major piece of their software like this before*.

I suspect it must have something to do with the OS from that article the OP links to. It says Mac decided against going 64 bit or something....over my head. This is why I'm asking, Why can they do it with lightroom and not photoshop.

Either way I'm not botherd. Like I said above, it'll be a long time before I really need 64bit processing anyhow.

*take that statement very lightly as I can't remember yesterday let lone 1995.

it's actually in the article. it's down to a decision by Apple not to produce a 64bit version of Carbon (the programming layer Adobe were using all along to develop 64bit CS4). Adobe now have to port all their existing code to Cocoa, which will give them 64bit support, but will take time.

The design & video market - who i would suggest are the majority of photoshop users (paying anyway) are slowy shifting to PC

The mac is starting to see a small regain of this market

I would suggest paul is right, that the major market share is now windows based

the reason for releasing the mac version second is that the 64 bit carbon support, which was using old code, has been withdrawn by apple

so adobe has to redevelop its code base using a different set of APIs ( and i would think the code base for photoshop is much larger than that of lightroom) and this is why lightroom was easier to re depploy in 64 bit.

I guess we don't know any of those facts, so it's speculation. But I'd agree that windows users probably do out number mac users.

Either way I guess it's about code base rather than customer base.

    Thanks for the explanation guys.

Im assuming there'll be 32 and 64 bit versions.

It would be commercial suicide to go 64 bit only... 32 bit windows will be the majority for a long time yet.
