I checks other threads that came up in a search but didnt help me.
Mods please move if this belongs in Unix forum.

basically i want to triple boot a system that already has xp and vista
    currently dual booting.

I have 30gbs of unpartitioned space that i want to install ubuntu on
after following a guide i found on another fourm i got stuck at the
partitioning stage after booting to the ubuntu live cd. specifically
with the swap and root partitions , so i decided to reboot and
do some further research form vista. long story short i had to fix
the mbr and i got back into vista.

Id appreciate some help before i end up haveing to rebuild entirely :D
I cant see what happed to screw up the mbr as i didnt actually apply and changes from the attempted ubuntu install

If you google "xp vista ubuntu triple boot" there are some good guides on what to do.

You already have xp and vista on seperate partitions?

Easiest way (I thinkk) would be to leave that 30 gb as empty space (delete partition) and boot from the ubuntu cd. Choose the option to use free space. Google fixing mbr though just in case! Or even better check out clonezilla which I used today. Backs up your hard drive in case things go pear shaped.

does ubuntu give you an option to install into the largest contiguous free space ? - if so that's the one to choose

You could do it manually by creating a swap partition equal to the size of your ram and use the rest of the space for your root partition.
