HI is there a course for women to go on that teaches them the more difficult tasks in life like how turn lights off, put the lid back on coffee jars and to ocassioanally turn the heating in the house down. I came home from work one day last week and my wife had 13 different lights switched on in the house at 4.30 in the afternoon!! When i asked her about it she told me to mind my own business and that she'd had a bad day. She keeps the central heating on 24hrs a day at an average temp of 52c then complains that the gas bill for 2 months is over €500!! Right now she is in the bath which is full of hot water but the immersion heater is still on. I am not a tightwad or a misery guts but she must have a carbon footprint the size of 10 people and it seems that every bill we get just gets higher and higher. Is there a course in the dublin area that teaches the basic life skills that she seems to not have picked up on the earth yet?

Dude just ring up the gas people and the esb you can have a token system put on your meter free of charge they will give you a card , you take this card down to the shop and they scan it when you buy tokens a fiver a piece, then you take the tokens back to the meter and swipe them , it credit’s the meter (your charged the exact same price as if you where to pay the normal way ) then at the end of the two months instead of a bill you get a notice saying how much you have used , My sister was horrendous with the gas and esb until she had the token system put in , she buys them weekly (you can credit it with as much as you like at a time) most of the time and it helps her keep an eye on how much she uses

Can this really be done in your own home? I thought this was just for things like student accomadation etc... I would love to get this into my house if possible?

hey - I am like you (and female) - I am a big one for turning everything off, unplugging everything after use etc. It is partly that I am a tightwad and dont believe in wasting money and then partly the carbon foot print. I recycle everything and dont see why I should undo that by not turning lights off.

First off get the energy saving light bulbs - they are expensive up front but cheaper in the long run

Second - put the heat on timed, tell your wife that it will come on half an hour before she gets up in the morning and half an hour before she gets home (another option is to sneakily turn down the temperature slightly each week or two - my mam does this to my dad)

Third - no there is no course, but you need to sit down and explain to her that your bill is so high, with the money you save you could take a weekend away together, allowing her to relax and destress (if she is always having a bad day)

We live in a society now where people dont put on a jumper when they are cold, and lounge around the house in a t-shirt!

Anyway, dont make a big deal of it, just do things one by one - like when she leaves a room, when you walk past turn the light off... and then encourage the kids (if you have any) and her to do it too. Slowly but surely the message gets through - its like a habit.

I had people living with me who never turned things off or recycled (they still dont) but after a while of living with me they began to switch things off because I was. It took me a while to train my b/f but he turns everything off now (except the cooker but sure no one is perfect:))

    good luck

More of a ladies lounge issue than PI, but anyway.

Tell her that having the central heating on all day will dry out her skin and age her skin prematurely. You think Im kidding?? I moved home a few months ago and the central heating is on from morning to night in the house, whereas when I was living away I only put the heating on for an hour or two in the evening. All of a sudden my skin is much much drier.

    who pays the bills?

Let her pay the bills herself since she's clearly the one runnin them up

say it to her tomorrow. If she claims another bad day, then she needs a slap in the face

    I tend to agree.

    Grow up.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
