Am I the only one being inundated with porn via the UL email? For the past fornight, possibly longer, every time I open it I seem to have another email offering to enlarge my (non-existent) penis or something along those lines. They aren't even coming in marked as ***Possible Spam***. Those bastid emails are just too sneaky.

Hmmm my UL email account is still active but most of the mail I get is spam and it is marked as such by whatever spam filter UL are using. I don't understand why ITD won't just drop messages that are clearly spam (I can guarantee that most of the spam I receive would be recognised by a decent spam filter and dropped straight away and not make it to my inbox).......oh and I hope everyone will throw their support behind Cthulhu for the position of Taoiseach of this great nation.

I get between 10-15 emails per day. Half of them come from a veriety of japanese email addresses, so I have everything from that country filtered out (im not racist - honest).

I wouldn't mind if it was good porn. Crap porn = waste of inbox space

Just clear your inbox..that includes deleting messages from the deleted folder. Those large emails which have no relevance to me and clog up my inbox annoy me.

    Hey Guys,

As third year BBS Rep, I have received a ****load of complaints from people about this.

I have now lodged a formal complaint to ITD regarding the fact that at least 600-800 students are receiving this material through their emails. The fact that ITD have not noticed this before hand shows a huge problem on their end.

Question is what will ITD do now that they know.

None of us signed up for this crap. It looks like somehow an external client has got access to the UL mailing lists which also shows a huge security breach on their behalf.

Even though I'm not in UL anymore I just checked my account there and there's a load of spam in it. Infact most of it was marked as [Possible Spam] by the Mail Marshall filter that ITD use. For some rather odd reason ITD don't seem to be dropping this mail but they let it through anyway and just mark it as possible spam when they should just be deleting it before it even gets to peoples inboxes.

One does not necessarily have to sign up for anything to receive spam. E.g. using Bebo you have to supply a college email address if you want to join the UL Bebo group, the same with Facebook if I recall correctly - there is a strong possibility that this is where some of the spam originates from. It is also quite easy to generate spam (there are numerous bits of software that can do it). So with some basic knowledge e.g. that an MX record for *.ul.ie exists and a script + dictionary to generate names or oh I dunno ID numbers (they're not random you know) it'd be quite easy to bombard UL students with spam without ever having to get near a mailing list.

You don't really have any proof or sound reason (at least none that you've presented here) that any kind of security breach of ITDs infrastructure has taken place.

Disclaimer - Rory does not work with ITD and although the above mail may be seen to be supporting them it isn't it is just pointing out that there are other ways to become the victim of spam.
