Now that i have my full licence going to get my mams old beetle out of the shed and get it going again, i got a qoute from odon.com (dont know if im allowed say there name, sorry ) and its come out v cheap, cheaper than my punto. thing is some of the lights dont work, and brakes not the best and has alot of rust. my question is, since i dont need to get a nct or a engineers report on it, can i just drive it on the roads, once insured, in the condition its in.

The insurance company never asked any questions just a valuation, which i gave at quite low. i know it would be better if i got the rust sorted on it.
    just wondering what others think....??????????

    thanks

If its over 30 years old and insured then your are free to go but you'll get busted by the cops for no lights of course!

Quickest way to lose you licence I would have thought.

To be insured and legal, even though it doesn't need a NCT, it'll have to be roadworthy.

Bring the car to me and i check it and bring it back on road. I am spezialized in aircooled VW's.

No you can't drive it on the roads.
Stick to the footpaths but keep it under 30, you don't want to draw attention to yourself.

im sure you are joking, but in case you arent.....DON'T take it on the road unless its road-legal...the rest of us wouldn't thank you if you were the cause of the rest of us losing our privileges.....

going to get some professional work done on it before going on the road. does anyone actually understand what i mean though, cause its needs no nct or engineer's report, potentially and legally somewhat it could be driven on the road in its present condition. should this not be changed and have nct on all cars? cause if talking safety thats really the only way.

    thanks.

Shush! Classic owners are "getting away" with this system as its preeumed there are not many of 'us' and that we're responsible careful owners.

just because a car is NCT exempt doesnt remove the onus from the User to make certain it is safe and legal. As an NCT runs for 2 years, the same onus applies to users of cars WITH NCTs. I fervantly hope all Classic users would not take an unsafe car on the road...

Up to a couple of years ago, there was an old boy used to come into Waterford every Wednesday in a rusty brown Austin Cambridge that would make that yoke look flash. He used to come over the bridge into town but would park up there and walk the rest of the way to the weekly market to get supplies.
The car was close to total collapse but as he never exceeded 20 mph, other drivers gave him a very wide berth he seemed to survive OK.
