Credit where credit is due,as they say, excellent coverage on the breaking News this morning re Bertie Ahearne.

Am I being naive in thinking they had no advance notice before 0930??

One way or t'other they did very well to roll out the punters and get O'Rourke in to host an extended News at One.

    Well done to all concerned.

What I heard of their coverage it was quite good. I avoided Liveline though as I felt it could have caused me to have some kind of coronary episode :)

I'll probably flick through the various drivetime shows now to have a compare and contrast session.

Nobody knew nothing before 9.25 am which is when Bertie called Eoghan Harris to say thanks.

    Mike.

The first 20 minutes of Liveline today was the first time in my life I've ever felt carsick. If I hadn't switched over, I'm pretty sure canonisation would have been mentioned.

    It was sick-making.

I don't think I heard one dissenting voice in the entire show. Lowlights included a guy who met Bertie at the Beaumont House one Saturday night and was almost in tears because Bertie remembered him by name the next week (clue - that's what politicians do) and dragging out that well-known political-commentator and arse-wriggler Nicky Byrne to deliver a grave-side oration.

A fair and balanced programme it was not. Joe Duffy should really keep his head below the political parapet if he values that €360K annual contract he was with RTE.

Bertie Ahern just managed to avoid the long-knives of Fianna Fail, but the verdict on his long-term legacy has yet to be returned. It was repugnant to see how the one-time president of the Communist Society of TCD allowed his brand-name to be used as a blatant shill-fest for the Ahern dig-out boys.

    + 1.
Some excellent journalism, both on the News At One and Drivetime. For all their faults, you can always depend on RTE when a big story like this comes along.
