not including websites, or the exhibition i did in town a few years ago, the first time i was published was recently; the OPW used a photo i took in glasnevin cemetery in a book about the commonwealth war graves in ireland; it's their job to maintain them. it's currently in the shops.
they wanted a photo which was identifiably a graveyard shot, but with no names visible on tombstones, or identifiable graves.

    was this one:

    160207016.jpg

this does not include a tabloid using a photoshop i did of bertie (how apt) after grafting his head on conan the barbarian's body.

I think mine was about 7 years ago, in a magazines "Readers Photos/Letters" type page. I'm now on the magazines list of staff photogrpahers. Humble beginnings and all that. I'll try to root out the image....I know theres a 6x4 print of it somewhere......

Black Francis (Pixies) playing outside the gates to Stephen's Green. Hot Press printed it in a couple of issues. :)

Been in a couple of photo comps before that, but I guess they don't really count!

This is the first picture that I was paid for.
I had other stuff published over the years.
The Daily Mail used this in a match report.
    Roy subsequently joined Sunderland.
I'm not overly impressed with the image, but gladly accepted the cheque.

A local paper (not to me) took this from a website I ran in 2005. Pic was taken in 2002 with a fuji 2800z.

By pure luck I happened to pick up a copy of the paper. Contacted them and they apologised.

Started working for them two weeks later. It was only then I got into the photography.

Went full time within a year but now only do some freelance writing and snapping for them.

My first image published is totally horrible. The conditions were the worst I've ever had the mispleasure of shooting in.

I'd be ashamed to post it here. But, it was printed, I was credited and I was paid for it. So, I guess I can't complain. We all have to start somewhere.

Local papers are always a good place to start.

I met the right person and the picture went in and I was paid for it, I rekon if you take shots of sports that are not well covered you are going to be published sooner rather than later.

Had stuff printed in local papers, though that was as much to do with me being a PRO rather than any great photographic merit. That said, I did see one of my shots reused recently, and it's also on their website linking to their sport section.

However, I do remember my first press release to make it as a news piece on AERTEL. Still have the screen shot somewhere. :)

First paid-for published pic was in The New Scientist a couple of years ago, of the Derrybrien landslide in east Galway (second pic in this link http://www.monasette.com/archive/000740.html).

It almost made up for the fact that, while shooting the landslide in the first place, I managed to fall into a cesspit of peat and muck, had to walk back to my car past about 30 grinning workmen while covered waist to toe in dripping gunk, and having to drive home in just my smalls.

Subsequent publishing accomplishments have required less suffering.

super shot trooney -the imperfections highlight the seediness of the whole situation , and add to the atmosphere -- that for me is what photography is all about !!

The first one I got payment for was in a local Meath magazine, I got a picture frame and 25e, it is a very small magazine (~10k publication).

Did some stuff of an irish wrestling company a long while back which were printed in a local paper. THat was my first, was fun. Some band stuff in herald AM etc and also got a full page ad in Fins magazine, a shot of surfer Laird Hamilton I took. Lately just been doing odd bits and bobs for the college mag, although it's a nice looking mag I have to say, so it's all gonna go into the portfolio :D

May I ask how you all got into it, with local papers etc? Did you send in unsolicited pictures, or did you know people in the paper, or did they just find your flickr pic?

That's a great story about New Scientest... I'm a regularish reader, so I'm seriously impressed!

Elven is being modest ... I seem to remember a whole article being written abotu her and flickr in a phtography magazine ... was there no accompanying pic ?

In my case you'd have to download it ... but there are three pictures in this adventure travel magazine taken with my camera ... I say that because one of them is of me rather than by me but the other two are all me -

    Venture Magazine

    Venture Mag Text Version

since then a few here and there for the GAA and local county boards ... but I gave up on sport out of sheer boredom ... I prefer to watch from the stands ...

EDIT: Actually now that I think of it ... there are two images of me in that magazine ... first to spot the second one gets a free sensor clean ...
