Audio on afl.com.au through the live gamecentre links on the right hand side of the homepage.

Weekend highlights on Setanta Sports 2, Monday 7th at 6PM (and probably TG4 around 11pm on Wednesday night)

    My picks for the weekend
    Bulldogs v St Kilda: Doggies
    Roos v Hawthorn : Hawks
West Coast v Fremantle : Eagles
    Brisbane v Sydney : Lions
    Essendon v Carlton : Bombers
    Geelong v Melbourne: Cats
    Richmond v Collingwood : Pies
Adelaide v Port Adelaide : Crows

some difficult choices, but thats what happens on Rivalry round. Can see tha saints winning, Freo could well do the Eagles, never know with Sydney, and Power will want to kick start their year.

6 goal win for the bulldogs, great second half performance seeing them through. Akermanis seemed to have a god game, mentioned a bit on radio and scored a few goals.

    WESTERN BULLDOGS 1.2, 6.6, 11.9, 19.11 (125)
    ST KILDA 7.3, 9.6, 10.8, 13.9 (87)

Saints just collapsed having been 37 points up afer the first quarter. Credit to the Bulldogs but that's a crappy start to my footy tipping week.

Not a happy bunny at all this afternoon. Another horrible performance from the Eagles in the Western Derby. Trailed for most of the game and never looked like winning, although the umpires didn't do us any favours whatsoever.

Having kicked 7.2 in the WAFL last week, McKinley didn't look out of place at AFL level and got a couple of goals. Kerr was his usual busy self but tried to do too much at times.

Poor game of football with a lot of basic errors but the marks from Pavlich, Kerr and Hayden were quality.

Absolute cracker tonight between the Bombers and the Blues with Essendon eventually coming through by 16 points, 150 to 134.

Hawks overran the Roos earlier, and the Swans lead the Bears by 2 goals at the half.

still stuck in the past eh Xavi? :p

most got a good few right in the tipping this week anyway.

Eagles were ****e again against the dockers. really scrappy game. McKinley did well alright. Main difference tho was a power scoring physical forwad like Pavlich. Hansen was poor again, and Lynch was in and out of the game.

Hawkins looks to have really filled the Nathan Ablett void for the cats anyway. Looking like he'll be a serious player. Collingwood and Hawthorn still motoring away nicely anyway.

I see that O'hAilpin didn play, and Martin Clarke was out again. Are either of them injured or are they dropped?

By the way, whats does Dream Team (DT) and Supercoach (SC) stats mean in relation to players stats? I take it they are 'formulas' for measuring the performances of players, but are they accurate and do people use them?

    eg: Martin Clarke
Goals Kicks Handballs Disposals Marks Goals Behinds Tackles Hitouts FF FA DT * SC *
     Total 1 4 4 8 2 0 0 2 0 0 2 28 27

Not sure which Dream Team the DT relates to but the Super Coach one is the Herald Sun's Supercoach Fantasy Football comp. It's each player's score for the week.

Fantasy Football (or Dream Teams as they call them over here) are massive and the Supercoach one is probably the most popular. Before the season started SEN (Sports Radio) had a week devoted to Supercoach and what players were good value.

The scoring system is quite detailed but basically players get points for possessions, kicks, handballs, marks, goals etc and lose points for clangers (kicking the ball directly to the other team) etc.

I'm doing it this year but it's bloody hard. The FoxSports one we're doing here is a lot easier.

I'm doing the Super Coach one too and it's very very detailed. As mentioned, the Fox Sports one is easier so I thought it'd be a good place for the forum to start.

I actually haven't a clue what the story with Clarke is. I'll have a dig around.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 387 ✭✭hanton12

Clarke played for the reserves last week, and was expected back inot the first squad for this weeks game, so maybe he is still just dropped form the team. Hopefully he regains his good form anyway and gets back into the side.

Thanks for the info on Clarke.
Fantasy Football (or Dream Teams as they call them over here) are massive and the Supercoach one is probably the most popular.

I see. So do people/analysts/experts put much credence into them, ie: using them to show who is the better performing player or not, or is it 'an inexact science'?

For example, I see a lot of emphasis on disposal stats, kicks and handballs, but if a player is taking many safe options with their kicks and lots of short handballs when a better player may be taking the more riskier passes, etc. You know the way it is with stats, they can be deceiving and tell only part of the story.

Btw, Xavi, were you at the WCE match? What do you think their chances are of winning? Are these blips or is it more a general malaise?

I wasn't unfortunately. I had to go to a convention for work.

It's most definitely not a blip. The depth of the squad just isn't there after losing the likes of Judd and Cousins. Even Rowan Jones was a starter last year and he retired. These players haven't been suitably replaced.

Young players such as Priddis are having to take on a lot more responsibility this year and they are big shoes to fill. Plus the lack of a consistent goal kicker is doing us no favours with Quinten Lynch as unreliable as they come and Mark Le Cras is no superstar.

It's a bit of a transitional year/end of an era in many ways so making the eight would be a good achievement.

Yeah, that seems to be a reasonable assessment. I agree, it is hard to replace good players. At the moment, I cant see anyone beating Geelong to the premiership but its early days and a long season and there are likely to be at least a couple of pivotal tight matches with just a few points in them.
