    Hi
Im looking for some advice and help cos god knows you dont get much of that in mary I.
    Im 22 and female
I got a 2nd class honours degree in theology and english from mary I and applied for my hdip

I applied everywhere and was foolishly optimistic that id get it.
So im pretty gutted right now as i did'nt get any place as they said i had'nt enough points.

The thing is i dontfancy repeating this process year after year only to get rejected each time. (A girl i know is temping in a limerick secondary school and despite teaching there for the past 3 years has been rejected 3 years in a row)

What are my options?? I had feck all guidance in mary I so if anyone could give me any bit of advice or help id really appreciate it.

The thing is i loved teaching when i was on co-op and i cant see myself doing anything else.

    Thanks

Sorry to hear that you didn't get the h-dip! I applied last year and didn't get it, same as yourself had a 2:2 degree so my points weren't high enough. So I've been subbing alot and the got a maternity leave cover for this year. So I re-applied this year and thankfully I got accepted. So try get some teaching experience to put up your points and re-spply next year. Hope this is of some help to you.

i didnt get the h-dip the first time i applied so i ended up doing a 1 year Masters at NUIG and that gave me enough points the second time i applied,

The way of bumping up points for the purposes of the PGD in Education are:

    1) Doing a post-grad course - Masters = 6 points, Higher Diploma - 3 points or other diplomas or certs which are worth 2 or 1 point.

    2) Doing substitute teaching which is worth 1 point for 50 hours, and another 1 point for every hundred hours after that.

Doing another primary degree is technically an option but presumably one doesn't want to go down that road!

Obviously with a 2.2 there may be the same problems with getting into a Master's as there is getting into the Dip in Education as depending on demand a 2.2 might not be enough. A lot depends of course too on the level of the 2.2. Is it as low one or a high one? If it's low to medium then it's a long way up to 60/61/62% average that would probably be required as a minimum for the Dip in Education. (It should be said that points are a bit lower this year than in previous years.

The most reliable and painless way, unless the OP has a real interest in a Master's would be to rack up substitute teaching hours if possible. Obviously that can take a while depending on subjects.

Another possibility would be the Hibernia primary teaching route assuming that Leaving Cert honours Irish is not a problem.

Hibernia would make the OP a Primary teacher though...
