What micro nitro?

I'm thinking of getting a mini nitro for backyard bashing and for times that the Revo is to big.
Can any of ye recommend a mini nitro?

I was looking at the Trinity Next and the Team VTX MST1. The MST1 looks great with lots of alloy already fitted, but not much available by way of support. The Trinity Next in essentially the same truggy, without all the alloy, and parts are more readily available (TowerHobbies).

I don't really want the buggy style, I prefer the truggy look.

So what should I go for.

I'll be using my spare Spektrum receiver so what ever comes with it will be binned. I don't mind buying from the states to take advantage of the excellent exchange rate.
It might even sneak in under the customs radar (like my Revo did :D)

    Cheers

How did you ship the Revo? standerd mail or carrier?

I can't remember the mailing option, but it was the cheapest one tower had. I was is no hurry to get it, and it did take a few weeks to arrive. But the postie delivered it and there was no customs charges.
IIRC it cost about €400 all in with postage included. (Revo 3.3)

Xray do the nitro powered 1:18 scale NT18T (truck) and M18MT (Monster Truck). I have the electric version of the MT and its great fun.

The do kit and RTR versions and while Xray are slightly more expensive they are very good quality and offer good parts back up.

Can price them up for you if your interested.

Check out www.teamxray.com for more info.

I bought Plug's Mini-T and while it's great fun inside the house and on paved areas, the small ground clearance makes it unsuitable for any offroad use. Electric suits the 1/18 perfectly, but I think it's just too small for a sensible nitro application - besides, then you can't use it indoors anymore.

Not interested in using it indoors. I want one for backyard driving. Plus, the Curragh is only a few minutes from me. Loads of places there to use it.
I really like the idea of a nitro powered truck that sits in the palm of my hand :)

Each to his own I suppose. I wouldn't go smaller than 1/10 scale for outdoors offroad bashing, especially with nitro. As a matter of interest, have you actually had one of these small scale models "sitting in the palm of your hand"? It's hard to believe how tiny they really are - makes working on them quite an experience. (Time to break out the magnifying glass!) If you drop a screw/nut/clip on the floor it's gone.

Yeah, I've seen them up close. Really impressive little beasts. I used to have a 1/5th scale FG Marder which was a monster . So I want to go to the other end of the scale with a micro.

I`ve said it, and I`ll say it again. If you want an RC model for the garden, its a tank ye need!
Hours of fun scarin the local kids, and not a dog or a cat has been in my garden since I got my Tiger :)
Just think of it, sittin on the patio on a sunny day, raising a nice cold one, drivin your tank around the garden!:D
Much better than loud music to annoy the neighbours!

You could even take it down to the curragh and sort out the lads in their Scorpions!
Heres mine and a packet of harry rags to give you an idea of size

The tanks sure are cool Dok, but a wee bit slow. :D
How about the Kyosho mini inferno 09 and 09-ST. Any of you have any experience with them?

The Tiger is cool Doc. A pal of mine made a 1/4 scale Tiger. Most impressive.

I am reading this thread and thinking no way I would never buy a model with a small piston (nitro) engine.

That's because in my experience (no offense those of you who may have one) the small nitro engines are far more hassle than bigger nitro engines. I am referring .10 size engines and smaller.

If you thought bigger nitro engines were fiddly you have a whole new level of fiddly, to deal with, if that engine is made in an even smaller size.
So once you go below a certain size they are more trouble than they are worth .... and when you're trying for ages to start it, tune it wanting smoother but getting nowhere - the enjoyment of using it slowly evaporates away.

I suspect that the smaller the engine - the sooner the owner gives up and stops using that particular model.

That's why for a SMALL HIGH PERFORMANCE MODEL I WOULD ALWAYS CHOOSE BRUSHLESS ELECTRIC POWER. Nitro glowfuel can't touch electric - it's just cheaper at first and has lots of problems.

( Standing well back - flame suit on! )

I'm not opposed to an electric version, but what kinda run times would you get from them? A filler bottle of nitro would go a long way in one of these. And I already have gallons of the stuff at home for the Revo.

Would I need loads of batteries to get a couple of hours run time?

In electric duration and power depends totally on what you buy. Buy cheap get a toy. Spend a heap. get performance.

A generalisation .... 1/10th with brushless, and conventional nimh cells, going flat out fast as you can in a race ...... about 10 minutes.

On a fast charger recharge time about 40 minutes.
So with three nimh packs, on running, one cooling, one on fast charge ... more or less continuous running.

Lipoly batteries run for longer but recharge slower, about 60 minutes.

    No,
I dont want to contradict you above anyone on here because of the resulting Lecture i am assured of
    BUT
5000 Mah Lipo on charge @5 amps takes how long?
Remembering that you cannot fully discharge them fully because of damaging them
From what I hear you charge in around 35 minutes.

I will know soon enough as I have some ordered for my sons new race car

    Never ...... :)

A 5000mah (=5A) lipoly battery at 5 amps (per hour) is full in an hour.
Add a bit extra for heat loss in the charger/wires = about 65 minutes.
Only the very best lipo can take a recharge quicker without consuming lifespan. ie Only Kokams do what the label says.

The more robust nimh packs are the ones I torch until full!
But they would be 3300, 3700 capacity. I don't count the 4000 cells due to inherent design faults that cause them to break.

Hey Vectra - careful - don't go dropping his lipos into your 25% nitro container or I'm likely to hear the bang over here! :D
