Just been told by Dr that theres nothing that they do, take a few painkillers and it be fine in 4-6 weeks

I have the flu so coughing is like stabbing my self repeatedly in the chest.

what treatments are available other than pain killers and hold a cushion tight when coughing?

Im in the same boat, I never realised how much I rely on them.
It hurts to stand up,sit down, lie down, sit still.

Im in discomfort the whole time - Its the worst in bed when im asleep and I roll over and wake up from the pain.

Nothing can be done afaik - just rest - shame as Im just getting my fitness back.

    Ouch.
Sometimes they can strap them - depends on where it is I suppose. All you can do is rest and let it heal. Oh, and stop coughing!

I fractured one in a fall a couple of years back and just as the pain had gone - about ten days - I sneezed suddenly while brushing my teeth. I heard it go (and felt it) and had to start from scratch again.

I think I hurt mine on sunday morn - theyve gotten progressively worse since then.
The next month is gonna be great crack

although we donlt give out medical advice here, don't let anyone go near you with a strapping! that went out with the dark ages.

have done it myself lads and its pretty sh1t. nothing really to do other than take the painkillers, and take it easy. can take a few weeks. if you think your in a particularly bad way get back down to the doctor.

obviously make sure you are being prescribed enough painkillers. Standard is Paracetamol and Anti inflammatory (eg ibuprofen) and Opiate.

Had 4 fractured ribs last year. Very uncomfortable, especially in bed when you don't realise how much you move around. Just take a big bunch of painkillers and/or anti-inflammatorys.

opiates? would that not increase the risk of respiratory depression?

No unless you are using huge doses. Most effective cough bottles contain opiates

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

well codeine barely counts lol ;) but thats the point of it, it supresses the cough reflex. its why you shouldn't be using a codeine based cough syrup for a chesty cough, only for those dry itchy annoyin ones.

so if your saying that codeine = opiate then yep, might not be a bad idea. I thought you meant morphine as analgesia for the cracked ribs .

I only had bruised ribs! I felt like an Alien was trying to pop out of my rib cage! Excruciating pain. Nothing that can be done but grin and bear it and try and let it heal. I was on Difene didn't do much for me.

i cracked ribs last october and im still in severe pain
the problem for me was my injury was misdiagnosed , was told i simply had a fractured rib but 3 mths later after having been in hospital again with heart palpitations , was told i had severe chest trauma ( much more than a cracked rib)

doctors are very lazy when it comes to chest pain , they just tell you to take painkillers and that there is nothing they can do , i was told the 1st day i would be sore for 6 weeks , when 6 weeks past i was told it would be 3 mths , after 3 mths the fracture was no longer showing up on x ray and i was told that i was imagining it

when x ray or scans show nothing , the doctors ass is then covered so there quite happy to send you out the door with another presecription for painkillers

im seriously considering going abroad to try and find someone who will take me seriously
my experience with doctors this past 6 mths has been overwhelmingly negative
my experience of getting access to treatment has not been nearly as bad as we are all led to believe , just got the impresion when i was treated that the men in white coats were in it for the money and saw you as nothing more than a number

I fractured some ribs over a year ago and still have really bad pain when I sneeze or cough. If I'm standing when I sneeze I have to grab onto a table and clutch my chest with my other arm.

It just depends how badly damaged your ribs are I suppose, you might be lucky :pac:

relax , you have a sports injury , i fell down a manhole and got sandwiched with a pallet

a tip though , when a doctor tells you that your going to be sore for a month , that means at least 3 , doctors love to downplay injuries , it means less work for them , there happy to just send you off with painkiller after painkiller or failing that , tell you its all in your head this pain business , we the doctors know how much pain your in etc

    Same here
Damaged ribs a while back playing ball.
Had to go to the hospital later that night as I couldnt breathe.
Doctor said nothing broken, just bruised and I woud be ok in a week or 2.
3 Months later I was still a bit sore.
Hurt like hell to sneez or cought for 3 weeks.
Even now months later I still have spot thats painful to the touch.
REST REST AND MORE REST, is about all you can do

trained tues and thurs, pain is less but more

i can move or i think i can but when it comes to anything rib related pain is still intense.

Is working it off and managing the pain and hoping that no extra damage is done as good as rest?

normally with any bruising type injury i can work it off with the "it cant get an y worse " idea but with the ribs its differnet.

Really sore still but gettin better and can manage the pain somewhat with Difene and some other tab.

Are there any really really good painkillers that I can take to be able to play this Thursday again ??

i've broken ribs too - they hurt like hell for ages!

time heals all wounds though - but it took over a month for me.

I once bruised a few ribs and another time i broke one.

There is one thing you really need to avoid and that is catch a cold and start coughing. It is indeed like being stabbed, i guess. Cant know for sure as i never have been stabbed....

Also, stay away from people that know too many great jokes... laughing is nt a great feeling either.

I kept on playing football though and kept working.
It hurts bad every now and then but there is nothing you can do but wait till it is healed.

Same here. Fell out of a tree while fishing a few years back. Don't ask. :D Took two of the buggers out and bruised the hell out of a couple more. I was a good 4 miles away from my car which was fun. To add insult to injury the breaks were on the left side so I never wished for an automatic gearbox so much in my life. To add further insult to injury my doc after he examined me couldn't stop laughing when I described how I did it, which set me off, cue more pain. The git. :D

Jokes aside, they are bloody sore though especially trying to sleep. Painkillers tale the edge off though. Funny enough I remember having a few ales the weekend after and that really set them off for some reason. I had eyeshangingoutamyheaditis for a while with the lack of sleep. It took about the same time to heal as DrIndy for me too luckily.

I would imagine healing time it would depend where along the rib the fracture was and what actual rib or ribs was effected?

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
