Artefacts - how to diagnose

    Help, please :(

My screen has started getting artefacts - see an example here (the lines of pixels on top right of the screen cap):

    screenartefacts.jpg

This is just an example, it's pretty random (but mostly purple-ish in color) and can take many forms. EG here's another example (the few pixels near the tab and the URL line):

    screenartefacts02.jpg

How can I diagnose what's wrong? Drivers, Gfx card, PC, etc, etc. - absolutely everything unchanged for the past 6 months (at least), so I'm a bit stumped

    Looks like memory....

Download and run AtiTool, it has a built in artifact scanner.

Could also be drivers, but highly unlikely if it's been working up till now.

also, overheating, is the card active or passive, and if active, is the fan working, and clear from dust, etc...

    Thx for the pointers TerrorFirmer.
    Looks like memory....

You mean the card's memory, right?
Download and run AtiTool, it has a built in artifact scanner.

Done that, left it running several minutes but all it says in the UI is 'no errors for [timecount]'. ShouldI leave it running longer until it 'finishes' or...
also, overheating, is the card active or passive, and if active, is the fan working, and clear from dust, etc...

Active card, fan works fine, kicks in whenever needed (I don't game that much, and only "up to the card's specs" really: card's a 9800XT, I only play BF2 and Flatout2 in 1024/no trimmings). Never o/c'd it either. Been in the PC for over 2 years, working fine, PC's switched off after use every night (if/when I use it).

Really stumped... unless the card's reached the end of its lifecycle? Or it's somthing other than the card? (Tried the LCD with laptop, it's not the LCD).

    Heat eh?

Because this happens to me after I run Counterstrike for long enough:

    GLITCHORZ.jpg

Except that a restart of the game will fix the problem for a short while; ~20-45 minutes. ITs only ever happened with Counterstrike. Not even with any of the other games that run on the same Engine (like HL2 and TF2)

Used to happen to my old x1900gt. I couldnt fix it.
Had to RMA the thing. Artifacting can occur if the card overheats aswell.
Id be prepared for the worst case though, it may well be buggered.

Not overheating, I don't think: artefacts still there with all the fans on @ 100% ("Fan 3 @ 0 rpm" is an error, card fan set @ 100% with ATiTool).

So, time for a replacement then... :(

    Try a different driver first

I had a problem kinda like that before.....spent hours making sure everything was updated.....still no joy, so i took apart the entire PC and put it back together and still the same problem.....then i checked if the DVI lead was conected to the monitor properly.....and it wasnt.....

If your able to print screen the problem tho im guessing the card memory has killed itself....not to uncommon with ATI cards from what i have heard.

Its a good time to upgrade anyway! Really good value with nvidia cards atm.

Tried upgrading drivers (I've been using Omega's for years, never a worry), but no joy.

I'm using the D-SUB and of course I checked that first (I tried upgrading the drivers second ;)).

I'll be trying the DVI out this weekend, to rule out a faulty D-SUB connector on the card (and as the last possible check before the bin).

As for upgrades... nah, not worth it: I'm better off changing the whole PC (754 mobo, AMD64, 1GB RAM DDR), but that's not on cards just yet. An X800XT or X850XT, or even a straight replacement 9800XT will do fine for now - and they're pennies these days.

... and I'd never dream of using Vista, anyway!
