    Hi all,
I'm getting married in August & thinking about buying the wine, unfortunately don't know a whole lot about it & neither does himself. Tescos are having a wine festival at the moment & it looks like there are some good offers. Would any of you have any recommendations (in Tescos or elsewhere - Aldi or Lidl for example?). Hoping to keep it at max 10Eur per bottle, we're being charged 5Eur corkage by the hotel. The food on the day will be the old favourite, beef or salmon. Thanks!

Big ask, Allergic. Huge. Time to start buying sample bottles and testing them out with someone whose opinions on wine you trust.

    Or have beer. Beer's lovely.

You're right, I know! :o And of course I'm more than willing to try a few bottles. But I guess what I was hoping for was a wee pointer in the right direction... like someone out there might say "yeah, I've had xxx from Tescos & it's decent/a good price".
    But anyways...thanks for the reply!

A tenner a bottle, for a wedding, is a really good budget. You'll get nice stuff for that.

For the white, Sauvignon Blanc is the biggest crowd pleaser right now. O'Briens wines have a great New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc called "Matua", normally E13.99, but down to E9.99 at the moment. This has been on promotion for the past few weeks and is finishing up next Sunday, so you'll need to move fast. I considered getting this for my own wedding (also in August!).

Superquinn are also having a French wine sale right now. I think the Vermentino-Viognier (down to E6.74 from E8.99) might be a solid wedding white. They have discounts ranging from 25%-50%, and I think you get an additional 10% off if you buy in bulk.

For reds, maybe nothing too heavy, given the month you're getting married. Perhaps avoid Shiraz. Superquinn have a Medoc (Bordeaux) 2006 down to E9.99 from E19.99. Rioja is another popular red, Tesco has one in its sale that's down to around E8 from E16. Again, I think you'd need to move fast to get these wines.

I've read good things about Aldi and Lidl wines, but you can great deals, like the above, without having to go the Teutonic route for your wedding wines ;)

PM me if you've any questions. I work for O'Briens...

5Eur corkage is really good value

Yeah, it really is. We'll probably end up paying E9, and I think that's not too bad. I've seen E20 per bottle...

Excellent, thanks for that RedIguana, really helpful. Yeah we're doing well on the corkage, we negotiated it down from 7.50. It's a hotel in a small town and they get a lot of business from my extended family so maybe that's why they were willing to negotiate that far. So it's always worthwhile asking. They charge 22quid a bottle for their in-house wines so we really will be saving by bringing our own.

I bought wine in france for a friend's wedding. 251 euro for 84 bottles. And good wine too. One star rating in the French Hatchet WIne Guide. Even with the return ferry and cheap hotel accommodation it's still worthwhile. (bought another 150 odd bottles for myself of course.)
