Laptop freezing at start up-"Resuming windows"?

When I start my laptop the Dell logo appears, it flashes up resuming windows, then the screen goes black and nothing works... any suggestions what has happened. It is a new laptop that has only been used a couple of times.

If it is still under warranty, ring Dell to register the fact ther is a problem.

Is this on battery power or mains? Try starting up with a monitor attached to see if it is the laptop screen is the problem.
