Maybe its there call-sign and they want to inform their squadron who fired ??

No its not that, they all say it. In "Independence Day" The whole squadrons fires a missile and they all say "fox 2"

Fox *: "Fox 1," "Fox 2" or "Fox 3" may be caled by a pilot upon firing a missile. Each pre-determined number stands for a different missile type.

Or maybe each missile is coded eg Sidewinder is Fox2 and AMRAAM is Fox3 etc?

I always thought it corresponded to the hard point. For example what ever ordenance was on the hard point designated fox 2. Either that or each weapon is given a specific callsign before a mission. It probably allows them to keep track of which weapons where fired from where in the course of the mission and make sure every missle is accounted for when they are evaluating the data afterwards.

Fox 1 usually refers to a radar guided missile like a Sparrow or Amraan, Fox 2 is a heat seeker like the Sidewinder. Fox 3 is guns. Fox 4 is jokey term for a mid air.

From FM 1-02 (Operational Terms and Graphics): Chapter 3 Multi-Service Brevity Codes, Procedure Words and Tactical Tasks:

FOX (Number) Simulated/Actual launch of A/A weapons. ONE Semi-active radar-guided missile. TWO: Infra-red guided missile. THREE Active Radar guided missile.

FOX THREE (X) SHIP: Valid missile shot against (x) separate targets (Assumes 1 missile per target)

2nd FOX THREE: Simulated or actual launch of multiple active radar-guided missiles on the same target.

    None are NATO-standard codes.

GUNS is used for a gun engagement. (Oddly enough)

In relation to your own trade, are there 'brevity codes' for firing HE, Smoke, AT etc?

I love the ironic lack of brevity in the title and way Americans use jargon and terminology like 'Single person, manually actuated, soil displacement implement,' when spade will do just as well.

I used to maintain a tech library. We had various US military Tech Orders, mainly for the KC135 but also other general TO's. They were full of jargon. I had hours of fun decipherig them.;)

Fox one is for SARH (semi active radar homing) e.g the AIM-7 Sparrow.
Fox two is for IR missiles e.g the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
Fox three is for active radar guided missiles e.g the AIM-54 and AIM-120 AMRAAM.

If the AIM-54 or AIM-120 was launched active right off the rail, pilots would call out ''pitbull'' as the missiles go straight after the first aircraft they detect within a FOV when launched in this mode.

When using the gun or going in for a gun shot they call out ''guns, guns, guns''

Well, I happen to have the hard copy within reach, but I think it should be online somewhere. I don't believe it's classified.

We make fun of it as well. Household 6 goes by "Spousal unit, female type, one each"

No. We figure the smoke, explosions and loud noise are good indicators. As soon as you have time, you send out a contact report. So it would generally go.

    (Internal) Gunner: "Hey, look! Tanks!"
(Internal) TC: "Eeek! Shoot them, fast!"
    (Internal) Gunner: "Right, so..." (BOOM)
(Internal) TC: "Killed him. Get the other"
    (Internal) Gunner: "Okies" (BOOM)
(Internal) TC "Right. Look for more."
    (Radio) TC "BlacksixredonecontacttanksWestout"
(Internal) TC: "Gunner, see anything? Wait, what's that?"
(Internal) Gunner: "Bugger, lots of tanks"
(Internal) TC: "Gunner sabot tank regiment. Start with the left tank"
(Internal) Loader: "Christ, my arm's going to get tired"
(Internal) Gunner: "On the way..." (BOOM)
(Radio) Company commander: "Red one black six, what are you shooting at? Sitrep!"
(Internal) TC: "Feck him, I'm busy"
    (More shooting)
(Radio) CC: "Red one black six. Sitrep!"
    (Radio) TC: "Wait, out"
    (More shooting)
(Radio) CC: "God damnit, red one. What's all the shooting I hear over the hill? Answer me!"
(Radio) TC: "Black six red one, engaged and destroyed tank company vicinity TRP 2. Slant 4"
