    Hi guys,
Did a search of the forum on this subject, but didn't find too much of the info I am looking for.

Basically I will be going to Glendalough this weekend and I hope to get some good shots while there. So I have a few questions for anybody who has shot there.

    - Is the Glendalough monastic site/lakes accessible at any time? I was hoping to get some early morning/sunrise shots
    - What are some good locations in the general vicinity for shooting
    - Any other random advice/tips for the area

Thanks in advance.....hopefully I will get some good conditions for shooting!

    Cheers
    Dave

    Did you look at Flickr?
It tends to be my first point of call when going to a new place. It may not tell you the access or opening times but you can usually glean that from teh photos themselves...

To look at the tagged photos look at:-

and for the map to see where (approximately) the photos were taken...

Glendalough is easily accessilbe at all times. the car parks will probably be closed but there is plenty of parking in the area.

There is plenty to shoot, the monastic area the lakes streams waterfall etc. the walk around turlough hill is lovely and if you are fit there is some great scenery

Cheers guys! Thats some good info and tips.

So basically the car park is closed off, but I can still get access on foot at any time. Good stuff.

Something to consider is where the sun sets - because it's in a valley, you lose the light much earlier. However, when it does go down behind the hills, you might get that nice sun-rays effect going on:

Ironically enough, it looks like it was april 1st, heh, so the sun should be setting in the same position. That was at 4.40pm though, pretty early on.

The light was quite similar for this one, which was taken at 5.20pm in February...

Lovely shot! Thanks for the tip about the valley light....might venture out at 4:30 and see if I can get some nice lighting.

    Hi Guys,
Just an update on my Glendalough trip.
The weather was pretty good, some bright sunshine intermingled with some cold, cloudy patches.
Got out early on Saturday morning to try and catch the sunrise, was very cold, but got a few shots. Then went on some of the hill walks that day.
Was a good trip overall, but would have preferred a bit more time to get some more decent shots. Here are some of the photos:

Not really. Got a 400D there about a year ago.
Haven't been shooting too much though, only really get to visit interesting places when I'm on holidays if you know what I mean.

Going to Barcelona in June, so can't wait to get snapping out there! :)

Hehe, those wee robins are pretty tame but i haven't managed to shoot one without getting it mid-takeoff yet ;)

The 6th shot would have to be my favourite of the bunch there. Love the light.

A lovely set, a day well spent by the looks of it.

Cheers for all the great comments everyone, I wasn't really expecting them!

The robin was extremely tame, sat almost right in front of me!

Really great shots, I particularly like the robin one and the bokeh one. What lens were you using do you mind me asking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Noopti

    No problem.
I used a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens for a lot of the close shots, and a Canon EF 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 USM for the wider shots.

I borrowed the Tamron off my sister. It is a pretty good lens, the AF is quite slow & loud though.

One thing I forgot to mention was that when I got up at 5:30 on the Saturday morning to take the sunrise shots, I realized I have left my tripod at home. To say I was annoyed was an understatement.

Anyway, I have rarely visited these photography forums before, but there are some great topics, so will have to drop by more often.
One more question: How do you get that flicker banner thingy on your sigs?
