My friend lives in Surry hills, and it's a gorgeous area! Very upmarket! There are some really nice restaurants and shops in the area, and it's close to the train line too. You can even walk into the city - it's close enough!

Edit: Darling harbour is nice too but very touristy! I'd prefer Surry Hills, more chilled out.

Surrey Hills is definitely a nice spot.. I've stayed there a few times with friends.

When I was in Sydney my apartment was in Coogee... which is another unbelievable place... with a fantastic beach of its own.

Just had a thought - I've heard Redfern is a dodgy area in Sydney - right beside Surry Hills, so make sure your rental is not actually in Redfern and they're just marketing it as Surry Hills!

Redfern can be a bit of a Dogey spot alright .. Might be a place to avoid if it's your first time over there, especially if your going for two weeks as well.

You can't go wrong getting a place near "the rocks"/Darling Harbour... you'll be right in the thick of things then but it could be expensive.

I'm living in Chippendale, other side of the railway line from Surry Hills. It's probably your best bet for accomodation. Along Crown street there's a couple of nice pubs, plenty of restaurants and good shopping as you approach Oxford street. It's also the right side of town for heading up to paddington for the best shopping. All the buses to the eastern suburbs (Coogee, Bondi, Bronte etc) pass along Oxford street too. Don't worry about Redfern, I get the train from there every day and have never seen anything worse than I saw when I was living off parnell square. :)
Darling harbour is ok for a drink, but you wont spend much time there.
