Looking for some advice please....have just been told that I need to replace the Consumer Unit in my house - house is 30 years old and has the same box since then - the one with the big knobs on the outside.
I don't want to be totally ripped off when I phone for quotes so could somebody please advise how much I should expect to pay an electrician for this work? Thanks in advance,

If the wiring is 30 years old it isn't a simple as replace the board, who ever does it will also need to drive a new rod, bond the water pipes ( in the correct size cable ) and increase the size of the tails to the ESB meter & test the installation. Hard to put a price on that with out seeing the lay out of the house .

I understand - I was surprised yesterday when I phoned around some local electricians and was quoted between 1200 and 300 euros to do the job. Will pick a few of them and have them come out and look - thanks for letting me know, it may well be a bigger job than I think.

When you find out what has to be done come back and let us know. I would estimate a new consumer unit time+material would cost you €280-€350, there may be more work involved as bertie1 pointed out though.

    Hi folks,
Thanks for your advice, all done & dusted - cost €300 euros inclusive of everything by a reputable electrician. He also left me the Certification of the Work carried out so it seems all in order.
