Hi - considering a 2 week break in July to the north-east of USA - New York/ Connecticut/ New England/ Maine etc. Just wondering if anyone has been, any recommendations, any possible outdoor activities to do that time of year??
    Cheers

    Hi,

I love that area of the USA. My wife & I have been lucky enough to be able to visit one region there over the last few years (Maine) & have in fact gone back 3 times we've enjoyed it so much but it depends what you like in a holiday. We usually fly Aer Lingus direct from Dublin to Boston. We typically stay in Boston for 3 days to do the usual tourist things like visit Museum of Science (need a full day for that one - loads to see), shopping not only in the city itself but also on a day trip to Wrentham Village Outlets - you can pay a relaltively small fee which includes transport to/from Wrentham Village from the door of your hotel! Its a good spot for inexpensive runners/jeans etc etc, you can get a 2 day 'Trolley' pass which lets you hop on/off at various places of interest around the city & includes a tour of the bay/harbour area so its good value, there's the Boston Duck Tour, you can book a day trip to visit Newport Rhode Island & see the Mansions of various wealthy familes from the past, you can book a day drip to vsiit Hyannis, including a trip on a ferry that brings you out into the bay where you can see the beachside homes from various families such as the Kennedys..

We take a bus up to Maine - specifically a wonderful place called Bar Harbor. Its on the coast, near Canada. Its a fantastic spot - very welcoming, safe, is family friendly, but also well suited to couples or the solo tourist. Very scenic & lots of outdoor things to do. Trips on boats to go whale watching, tours of the National Park - the whole area is almost a National Park - stunning scenery. You can hire mountain bikes, go hiking, lots of lovely restraunts etc etc etc We usually stay there between 5 to 10 days depending on what our overall plans are.

Hope this whets your appetite & if you need more info, just let me know & I'll be happy to try help further. You can book almost everthing on the web - flights, accomodation, the day trips & its only a relatively short flight to/from Boston. Highly recommend Bar Harbor - its a great time of year to go - its going to be hot though at end of July/start of August so just be prepared for heat.

it is beautiful up that part of the world. Years back I did a bit of a road trip up to Vermont from New York. Just four lads and a car!

Boston city is well worth a visit, very nice place.

Also, it's a little bit further down but if you are interested in museums then Washingtom DC is a good place to spend a couple of day.

    Have fun :)

Thanks a mill for all the replies - have been on East Coast before: did a 4week crash course in Boston/NYC/Niagara/DC travelling by plane, but now want to get away from the cities (did the usual sights) and see the countryside.

Looking for national parks/ hiking/ rafting/ outdoor activities if possible, bit of chilling out by the coast maybe, so sounds right up our street.

    Cheers! :)
