Hmm... Skinny Puppy should be the first port of call for Industrial, and as far as Goth goes, you can't beat Fields of the Nephilim. Alternative Metal though? A Perfect Circle perhaps?

Yup! I've got all of those, perhaps I should be asking for some 'hidden gems'!! Thanks for the tips though...

Anaal Nathrakh-covers all the headings mentioned(well, maybe not goth)

    Watchmaker-hard to describe,sort of industrial,sort of grind,heavy as hell

Nasum-leans more towards the grind/alt category

    Agrophobic Nosebleed---as above

Skinny Puppy and Fields of the Nephilim +1

    Industrial

    Ministry Psalms is brilliant

Type O Negative's "Slow, Deep And Hard"

    Goth

Cannot go wrong with Type O's "Bloody Kisses" either for a slightly goth feel.

Sisters Of Mercy would be an obvious shout also.

Ah, I probably won't be of much help so, I'm not too into the whole Industrial/Goth thing any more. :pac:

assemblage 23 / front line assembly - amazing!
    fear factory - remanufacture
type o negative - life is killing me
    das ich (german goth industrial)
bauhaus - "in the flat field" or "mask" albums
killing joke - "nighttime" (not goth per say but real dark)
siouxsie and the banshee's - "juju"
    White Zombie - "Astrocreep 2000"

This was meant to be a quick post but of course I had to go through my music which took about 30 minutes :). I don't think anyone has posted the following bands. They are mostly Industrial/Metal/Dark Electro. I've highlighted the ones I quite like but they are all worth a listen. All the links point to the band's MySpace pages so you can at hear what they sound like. Just as a matter of interest, what counts as Alternative Metal?

I would always have put Tool in the 'alternative metal' Malice, that said, now that you ask I'm not sure. On a slightly different topic..I love Deathstars, they're great craic...

Trying to think of some of the more obscure Industrial acts I've listened to over the years. I'll trust you've heard Merzbow? Gotta love Laibach as well. For more of the goth thing, I'd recommend Switchblade Symphony. Can't think why I hadn't mentioned them before.

I love really dark music, but could never get into the "traditional" goth rock bands like the nephilim or sisters. They just dont sound particularly dark or genuine... to me that is. I dont hear the sadness or atmosphere in them at all.

for industrial try front242 and front line assembly (among the others mentioned)... but also see KMFDM for your "industrial rock"

    Some random suggestion from me:
    ASP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8kvrYuQHOo)

If you don't find what you're looking for here, try http://www.side-line.com/ or get an account with Lastfm and type in the genres as tags. You'll get lots of independant, unsigned artists there as well as the signed, big and small, old and new, from all across the world.

That's a nice long list :), I must check out some of those myself! I'm not sure how but I managed it but I missed Grendel and Retrosic off my list :o. Both of them are well worth a listen. I also missed out Zeromancer but they are probably more metal-orientated.

Also try Music Map. Type in a band name and it brings back related bands.

Il probably get shot down here, and i doubt its as hard as you might want, but gary numans last album "jagged" was very industrial, and hes bringing out a remix version "jagged edge" later in the year.

Good call with Ruoska. I listened to them for the first time last week. The singer reminds me a little of the guy from Rammstein (singing Finnish instead of German I assume :D ).

If by "cool fairly unusual like" you mean "boring, insipid, uninspiring and just plain dull" then yes, I agree with you :). I have one of their albums at home and I can't believe a record company put up the money to have them record the album in a studio. The vocalist can't hold a note when she sings and when she growls she just sounds pathetic. The music they write is slow-paced, generic tripe! There's also nothing industrial or alternative metal about them either. I suppose their goth because they wear dark clothes and too much makeup?

And just in case you think I'm attacking them because they're women, far from it. Even just on this thread alone you can check out far better female vocalists. Check out Brittany Bindrim from I:Scintilla or Chibi from The Birthday Massacre for a start.

It shouldn't have taken twenty-odd posts to mention Throbbing Gristle in an Industrial thread. They did invent the genre after all!

Alien Sex Fiend are ****ing dreadful (although to be honest, most of the bands listed in this thread are. Death Stars, WTF!) but Neubauten are still one of the best and innovative bands on the planet who have moved far from industrial music. I'm going to see them next week in London, can't wait. Seventh time to see them (and the fifth city I'll have seen them in).

Fair enough, each to their own and all that but seriously, whatever you like about Kittie, there are many other bands doing it far better.

There's no need to bring illegal downloads into it. Every single one of the bands you listed has a MySpace page where their music can be listened to legally for free.

I thought NIN would get more mentions too...

Although not labelled "goth" or anything of the like, novembre's "the blue" album is very dark and musically it just blows me away. Its filled with passion. Aweseome stuff.
There are alot of "goth" etc bands which really just sound rubbish. However when a band plays dark sounding music and are genuine and put so much of themselves into the music it really can be something special.

John, i agree about Neubauten but only had one 'tape' of theirs for years it was Haus der Luge and it was taped from my mates brothers album.
Now with the internet i can access their stuff as soon as i want to (I think I'm showing my age here , although i have to add i was only 13 when it was released.) very small window 'the tape generation'

Just wanted to let everyone know that the new VNV Nation album will be out in June, called Of Faith, Power and Glory.

Really looking forward to it!! They will be playing Ireland sometime this year, date to be confirmed.

    Recommendations?

Stuff I like this year so far:

    Wumpscut - ****it
    Apoptygma Berzerk - Rocket Science
Combichrist - Today We are all Demons
    V2A - Mechanized Infantry
    Uberbyte - DOS
    Skold Vs KMFDM
Prometheus Burning - Plague Called Humanity
    Magenta - Art & Accidents

    ..to name but a few.

Not interested in turning this into what is industrial, what isn't.
