Second-hand Fabia 2001 questions

Simple enough scenario for you petrol-heads out there:

    Right-hand-drive Skoda Fabia '01 reg 1.4l MPI.
Left-hand-side electric window works... ONLY when operated by driver!
When passenger tries from its own switch...nothing!
Obviously the window works fine... so, what's wrong?
Is this a "pop new switch in place of old switch" scenario?
Or a "pop the whole door panel out and do wiring check" scenario?

    Also:
Underside of driver-side mirror cracked by previous owner's abuse - will some black masking tape do the trick?

    Finally:
Plastic surround of front grill (not the metal grill itself but the car-coloured surround that also lifts with grill and bonnet) cracked at one point but still in place (can be pressed by finger but not too much or it would snap) - will Super Glue and masking tape from behind be sufficient?

(already ducking against "what a newbie!" protests and the like)

Sorry is this a question about a car you own or one you have seen and are looking to buy? If it's the latter run a mile!

If it's the latter run a mile!

Why so? Its a 7 year old car with a broken electric window switch, a cracked mirror housing and a cracked trim on the bonnet. Hardly indicative its been used for doing a recce for the Paris Dakar rally.

OP, the window switch should be simple to check. By all means have a look at the wiring but its likely the switch. It shouldn't be expensive or difficult to fix. The rest of the stuff might be patchable but you'd have to be careful not to make it look like a batch.

    Deja vu.......

But yes - it's most likely the passenger side window switch that is faulty.

On the cracked grill you might want to try fibreglass from behind and filler and paint on the front.

Thanks to all of you who answered, even the mile-running suggester :)

BTW seat covers bought at Halfords claim Fabia compatibility, but there's no way you would want to stretch them underneath the plastic base of the front seats... or stuff them somehow between the fabric and the plastic part of the seats. What were they thinking...?

Anyone out there who successfully installed such seat covers?

    Damn right!

A Skoda Service centre quoted €80 + VAT (...) for a new switch. Maybe I'm better off buying the Fabia fix-it-yourself book for 30 quid? :)

Did you start with the simple thing and check if there's a window lock button on the drivers side that's preventing passengers from opening their windows ? Can't remember if they usually just prevent the rear or all windows being operated but worth a try.

That struck me as well. Usually they just disable the rear windows, but on certain models it does disable the passenger as well.

Sorry, fellas, but no such luxuries for my humble Fabia. Driver side has controls for both front electric windows and a lock/unlock all-door switch. Rear windows are manual.
