I've got a fairly old laptop 5 years and its starting to overheat and become really slow, its a compaq n1020v which i salvaged a couple of years ago, not really sure why the fan is running so much, or why its running so hot.

if anyone has any ideas/tips let me know.

    Specs.
    P4 2.4Ghz, 768 Ram, 40 gig hdd with 17gig free.

Get a can of compressed air and clean out the vents, first thing to try.

I removed the battery and it caused all sorts of problems, wouldnt start on mains power at all but when I put the battery back in it was fine.

Hmm. A Compaq laptop. I've one of those and it's prone to overheating if the processor's got too much processing to do. I tried the compressed air trick and it didn't do a lot for my laptop. It's too difficult to open up at the back so I took the hoover to the vents and it sucked out loads of fluff. Seems to have fixed it up.

There's no harm either in running Cleaner on it to clear out unwanted files, tune up your registry and manage your start-up files.
