New Sky+ install + bad weather = no signal

    Hi all,
Last week I took up the offer of free Sky+ and install from boards.ie member and have been very happy with it until this evening.

This evening has been the first bad weather since install (wednesday) and now with the heavy rain but no wind, the signal quality on input1&2 has dropped as low as 33%. I have lost signal on living, virgin, bbc news 24 and many others and some others are artifacting, sound popping.

Signal strength is 90-100% on both inputs but quality is now 50% on both with the rain easing off.

Is it a bad install or lnb?
If I call Sky to try and get it fixed, will it cost me anything seeing as its not even installed a week?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Maybe the arm of the dish wasn't adjusted for the extra weight of the quad LNB or maybe the dish needs a little adjusting.

Living is coming in fine here in the heavy rain.

I checked my signal stats again this morning as rain has stopped and its a clear morning weather wise.
Signal strength was still consistent at 90% and quality has returned to 80%.

Living, Bravo & Channel 6 were working fine again this morning.

How much drop in signal quality should you see in bad weather? How come all my signal stats have returned to normal?

Depends on the dish size and cable length.

    Its a standard 60cm Sky mini-dish with qual-LNB running 12ft to PACE Sky+ box.

    Thanks for the advice lads.
I checked the dish when I got home seeing as its bright and dry this evening.
The arm? that holds the LNB is really loose; the locking screw, nut hasn't been tightened at all. I can rock the LNB up and down, left and right.
Explains why the heavy rain was causing my problems last night.

I think that I may be in a similar location to you and I had a complete loss of signal, nothing on any channel and our dish is quite secure. However if you think about it, in very heavy rain you could have (random guess here) liters of water between you and the satellite, so I suppose a signal drop off could be expected in very heavy rain with a thundercloud in the way.

Spot on dude. Call Sky and get them to send someone around as soon as possible... shouldn't cost you anything.

It's unusual though cos they have been consistently performing installs to account for bad weather, such as installing dishes quite low on external walls etc. Should be able to operate normally even in heavy gale force winds.
