    Hiya,

We're off to Rome for 4 days in May, and although we're planning to get one of those tickets that allow you to skip the queue at the Vatican Museums, we're wondering if it's worthwhile taking a guided tour?

We don't usually like taking tours, but in this instance we feel it might be worth while. The tours we were looking at were either 3 or 4 hours but fairly pricey at 40 quid per person.

What do you think? I know there are miles and miles of things to see but those of you who went solo, did you have a good experince?

    Thanks!

Oh man, Rome is the best. I was only there for 3 days and I was dying for an extra day. Just go solo. The tours are far too expensive and they dont really tell you anything great. You can wander around yourself and potentially learn more.

The Q for the museums are only like ten minutes so dont buy any of that fast pass stuff.

Make sure to load up on pasta!

I was in Rome last hear with OH and we went solo around the Vatican and had a great time. There is so much so see though it's hard not to enjoy it. At least if you are on your own you can take your time at the bits you like and skip over the bits you don't find as interesting.

We managed to skip all the queues by not going until after 12 - 1 pm. By that stage there wasn't really a queue and we just walked near enough straight up. We were staying very near the Vatican and every morning we would see huge queues already formed by 9 in the morning but by lunchtime they were mostly gone.

Oh, and girls cant wear short skirts or tanktops in the vatican. My girlfriend had to go back to the hotel to change before we went in.

Brilliant! Thanks for all the replies.

Another issue I'm having is trying to confirm the opening hours. I've heard Mondays are particularly mental since all other musuems are closed in Rome, so we were planning to visit on the Saturday morning. It actually closes early on Saturday though doesn't it? I can't imagine being able to see everything in just a few hours! The vatican website is sort of half english half Italian so difficult to know what closes when!
