Now that there a few games with online modes available for the Wii I thought I'd check to see if people are still having problems with NTL's service.

This was originally a problem with [thread=2055121867]Mario Strikers[/thread] so I am curious to see if people are having trouble with any other games.

I have just got Pro Evo and I'm unable to play online on it either. I've still got about 5 months left with NTL so I'd like to find some solution to this.

I have tested my wii in my own house (Ice Broadband) and also in a friends house who has Eircom - both lag with Pro-Evo anyway - just hope this improves with MarioKart.

As we all know we have the worst broadband in the Western World and until the lines are upgraded we are going to have to complain about this...

If anyone has different experiences with another provider please let me know.

aye having the same problems with proevo over ntl no gaming possible basically, hopeing so much that this dosnt happen with mario kart would be a disaster

Unfortunately it looks like mario kart has the same issue on NTL/ UPC whatever they are called. I can add friends to my friends list on the mario kart channel and see their miis. Then when i go to join a game i get an error saying i cant connect please try later. My friends can connect and play fine. :**( I had the same issue with mario strickers too. Rang NTL at the time and got some donkey who told me it was my router. When i told them i wasnt using a router and was connecting directly to the cable modem via the wii usb ethernet card they said they would escalate it but i never heard anything.

Won't work for me. Pro Evo isn't working online either. I can everything else online related (download ghosts etc) but connect and play. Pissed off tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭illumin

yeah this is very odd, i can play against random people from the continent or worldwide but whenever i use the friends roster i cant join friends rooms or they cant join mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

On 3mb UPC here (Booterstown area), connecting wirelessly.

It works for me, if not perfectly. Mario Kart is the first game I've gone online with. I do sometimes get that cannot connect to firends error, and also sometimes randomly get disconnected between races, but it works ok most of the time.

I haven't got my hands on mario kart yet but i'm still having no joy on strikers or pro evo.

For what it's worth I'm using a Motorola 5100 series modem and a Netgear WGR614 v7 router with NTL 2MB in Stepaside.

On the (useless) recommendation of some punter in NTL, I still have the Wii set up with a static IP.

Whats the use in having 12Mbit Broadband is ya just keep getting disconnected. playing mario kart Wii keep getting kicked out of games.
Using Net gear freebie I got with connection tried a linksys router no joy. know its not the router used it for my eircom connection that I cancelled on friday was playing mario no lag no disconnection it was perfect and only on 2Mbit connection. I'm now stuck with this for a year wonder if I've got an out in my contract. at least with 2Mbit connection it worked (along with other "applications") ringing NTL on Monday dont care if I sound like a sad git I pay for a service I should be able to go on the internet wit my NTL internet connection and play against other people on the internet...the above rant is just me pissed off i dont expect anybody to be able to fix my problem but I hope you take note Nintendo Wii + NTL they dont get along about to set up my 360 any trouble and some NTL rep is getting a router in the face

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 BIG___DAVE

thought ya might have had some weird setting ticked in router that was gonna fix all my problems. Dont worry I'll give the rep a good strong smack of a router in the face on your behalf aswell on monday

I hope you get some joy out of ntl BIG___DAVE because last time i rang them as i said previously in this post i got nowhere. Seriously thinking of changing provider. I think its a conspiracy against nintendo on ntls part :P

I have NTL 2 meg in D17 and it's a bit so so. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get disconnected right before the start of a race and sometimes it kicks me out between races. Not a great start :(

that's just a bit like ntl broadband in general - whether it be downloading, viewing the net, anything, it's very patchy IMO

I have ntl broadband but haven't set it up with mariokart yet
will let yas know my experience over the next day or two

All day yesterday I played multiplayer Mario Kart no getting disconnected all types of games battle modes grand prix even had a few matches with some mates and it worked no problems at all. I didn't do a thing I just chanced it and it worked and is still working. also 2 of my mates also have NTL BB. So I dont know i was all ready to verbally abuse some NTL rep and now I cant well I could but not really able to tell them to unblock some ports as I'd like to download a few files lets say "ISO of Linux" with some p2p software

Here's a history of my dealings with ntl to date:
    1. 5/8/07 - i emailed them about mario strikers not working online. i even linked to the mario strikers thread on boards
    2. 10/8/07 - received reply telling me they were passing it on to the broadband support team and asked me to confirm my contact number which i confirm on the same date
    3. 18/9/07 - i emailed again to say it had been 6 weeks and i had not heard from anyone and to see if they had an update
    4. 21/1/08 - emailed again to say it had been 4 months and i had not heard from anyone and to see if they had an update
    5. 25/1/08 - brian from ntl rang me and said that the problem is most likely caused by the fact that they use dynamic network and nintendo might be using static IPs to log users (or something). He said to check with Nintendo about setting up a static IP for the Wii. i did this and it worked for one game and then went back to the usual
    6. 31/3/08 - emailed them again stating what brian suggested and telling them it still wasn't working
    7. 14/4/08 - katherine from ntl rang me sounding slightly disinterested and put out. she said that ntl are a dynamic network and will never do static ips. she said her colleague brian says he only told me i'd have to contact nintendo and would never have told me to set up a static ip. she kept saying they don't support any 3rd party products and i'd have to contact nintendo. i told her brian had said it might be to do with static ip and to contact nintendo to find out. she kept going on about how they use dynamic ips and could never do a static ip for me. i explained that a static ip is something you set up on the router yourself and then she asked did it work! i told her it didn't and she said that i'd have to get support from nintendo as it's a problem with their product. i told her it was a problem with their service and that no other service provider is having any problem like this. she said that they only provide the broadband and asked me was i receiving it ok and can i surf the web. i said yes and she said that it's working fine so and that's all they're responsible for. i told her broadband is more than just going on the internet but she said they were fulfilling their service. i tried to argue that they weren't but she just tried to fob me off with ntl's premium support line and then tried to give me netgear's number to contact them cos it might be 'ports or something that need to be opened'. i asked was she closing the ticket and she said yes. i said they had provided no support and she just tried to give me the numbers again. i said i wasn't interested in them and got her name again and hung up. she was actually quite confrontational about the whole thing by the end of it.
i'm well p*ssed off with it at this stage.

incidentally i have removed all the static ip settings and have gone back to the default settings.

i just managed to play part of one half of a game of pro evo but every other time i get the 86070 or 85010 errors.

On NTL 3mb in Castleknock - never had any luck with Mario Strikers Charged or Pro Evo.

Ok I did nothing to my computer and now mario kart doesn't work... I dont understand how can it work flawlessly for a day and then just stop working. Rang rep for for of it I got no help I did get a premium number where I said so if I ring these guys they'll sort it out for me rep went very quiet. I then said can you get those guys to ring me and if issue is sorted ya can bill me. Saturdays night and Sunday evenings service seems to work. Gonna look to cancel this thing and go back to eircom never thought I'd say that I will miss the 12meg line but whats the point if they keep blocking ports if I get any joy I'll post it back but it doesn't look like its gonna happen

NTL notorious for doing packet resets on P2P stuff. This is what is happening. If you have wireshark you can scan the packets and look for RSET.

I'm sorry do their "tech support" need the difference between Internet and web explained to them? They provide the Internet and just because for a lot of people that purely means access to the web does not mean that they can ditch all other Internet services.

I can see why you'd be pissed, they are not providing your service

Also a few people in general are having problems with disconnects with MK though, could it be just it's too popular? I'm usually OK over here but have been kicked off once or twice and usually while trying to connect with a friend.

Maybe take The Hitcher's advise and see if there is a RSET packet being sent when you use the Wii as they may see it as P2P traffic?

Same thing happening here. Major headwrecking stuff. Will give their broadband support a call. Probably won't do much good but if enough of us complain they might do something about it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

I'm seriously thinking of switching to NTL but if this is the case, I can't switch :(

I use XBL and play MK online and am getting Brawl. I don't see the point if I can't play them online since the Wii is a "social console" after all.

What are NTL playing at? Couldn't they just open the ports for Wii online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

hmmm, i tried to play a few ppl in my friends list last night and got disconnected. i dont seem to hav any problems jsut picking a continental race and workign away like that.

same with mario strikers. i couldn ever play friends but could play randomers!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Email Nintendo, it might not be their problem but they might be able to tell you whats NTL are doing wrong.

Explain your situation that you suspect the problem is with your ISP (don't name them, saying you suspect the ISP makes the tech support more likely to follow through as they won't be passing the work on to second level support so they can get it closed fast and your not insulting their tech dept.) and you just want to be able to tell them exactly where the problem is occurring.

Right, I've sent the following off to NintendoServiceCentre@codestorm.co.uk. Feel free to use it if you are emailing them too.

    Hi

I live in Ireland and have a Wii connected to a 2MB cable broadband line via a wireless router (Netgear WGR614 v7).

I am able to perform system updates and access the shop, news and weather channels without a problem.

However, when I try to play my online games, Mario Strikers Charged and Pro Evolution Soccer, against either a friend or a random player I get disconnected with errors 86070 or 85010. Generally I get the errors before a game can even start but sometimes I am able to play a portion of a match before the connection is lost.

I suspect the problem is with my broadband provider (the only people I have heard about having similar problems are with the same provider) but they have been unable and unwilling to help. They have told me that they use dynamic IPs on their network but I am not sure if this is relevant. I have tried setting the Wii up with a static IP on my router but it didn't improve the situation.

Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Or anything that I can suggest to my service provider to enable the Wii to perform as it should?

    Thank you.

    Regards

really don't know what's going on now. but it's very frustrating.

I have 3mb NTL in Templeogue and have had a few online mario kart games without problem. the usual mario strikers and pes problems though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 =BlanK=

I've been investigating this disconnection issue ever since I picked up Mario Kart. I've gone through all the usual router configurations (static IP, upnp, DMZ) but still suffered the same problems with Mario Kart online, namely:
    • Long delays finding players
    • "Disconnected from other players" message before and after a race
    • Random disconnects from Nintendo WFC

Now, having found this thread of users reporting similar issues who all share the same ISP as I do, I am convinced NTL are the cause. I've sent an email to Nintendo with a cc to NTL, but frankly I'm pessimistic. Though its been a while since last shopping around for an ISP I'll have to see what my options are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

I've experienced a few disconnects from Nintendo WiFi Connection with IBB. One was definitely my broadband messing up but the other seemed to be the other person disconnecting. She was a friend I was chatting on Live.

She was still connected to me on Private Chat though and we could talk fine. Seemed to be that she got disconnected from one but not the other.

I'm guessing that means that it was probably a Nintendo problem that time.

I've never played against random people so I can't comment on that but I have had a room created that my friend couldn't join so I quit and let her create a room and then I could join which was weird.

Could it be sometimes Nintendo and sometimes NTL? Or just Nintendo? How often do the disconnects occur for you guys? I've only had 2 so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

i didnt get any disconnects until i start addin u lot as friends!! its all ur fault, yis feckers!! :p

Can people post what router they are using with NTL. Just want to find out if everyone with problems is using a router from NTL as that could be the problem.

ditto. I am having same issues and am with NTL.

Sometimes it'll work fine for hours.Other times its all of the above.probably to do with the fact that cable internet is essentially a shared resource.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Well server disconnects should only occur if you don't contact the server for a certain period of time. If this is occuring inbetween games try to spam the server with message :D It should keep you connected.

It takes a while to find friends so I imagine it might take a while to find other players sometimes, it really depends on the numbers online at the time so its pretty variable.

    =BlanK= wrote: »

    I agree.

Thought perhaps the long delays finding players and the random disconnects were part of the MK experience but played uninterrupted for a long time yesterday with same wii in a house with an eircom connection. much better online experience. ntl is a piece of turd. same with torrents.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

I'm not sure the MK experience is blameless. I was disconnected by someone using an eircom connection (usually very good) while using IBB and I had my laptop beside me and started doing checks on my connection and everything looked good to me. I have been having problems with my IBB Breeze connection recently but they weren't occurring at that time from my ping tests.

AFAIK Gamespy look after Nintendo's online so it should be pretty rock solid I imagine since Nintendo would have a go at them if it wasn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

    Got a reply from Nintendo:

Dear Customer, thank you for your email.

The error code you are receiving firstly indicacte that the NAT negotiation has failed a number of times, this is dealt with by the router and not the Wii so you may need to check these settings with the router manufacturer. However if you adjust the MTU value on the internet connection setting on the Wii from 0 to 1500 and if you are using an N router that you switch this functionality off and stick with B or G broardcasting on either channels 1 or 11. You may also want to look into increasing the TCP timeout value on your router.

    Kind regards,
    xxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

That's good advice but it might not solve the problem. I have my MTU set to 1450 on my router for gaming. I used a tool to find it, it wasn't the below which I have not tried but it might be helpful for some of you:
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793

I think the default TCP timeout value is probably okay so I'd adjust that as a last resort.
