VW Golf 1390cc. Loud noise coming from engine?

I've been driving a 07 Golf for the last 7 months and then 2 weeks ago a loud noise started coming from the engine. Its coming from the engine fan i think. Does anyone have any idea why it would be so loud? It starts getting very loud 10 seconds after turning on the engine and lasts for 10 seconds after turning off the engine.

Any help would be much appreciated

No idea what it is but since the car is 07 it should still be covered by the original VW warranty. Get it checked by a VW dealer is my advice.

Difficult to understand why it should be coming from the engine 10 seconds after it's been switched off -- I assume you mean when the ignition key is turned completely and withdrawn, in which case there should be nothing able to run on. Things to check -- does the engine run on for a few seconds when turned off? If so, is it overheating? (check coolant level). Whatever, if it's a loud noise that you can hear from inside the car and if the engine does run on when turned off, get it checked quickish or you could be in the market for a rebuild.

As Bazz said should still be under VW warrenty which is two years. Go to a Dealer and get them to look at it. One thing If you have used non VW approved parts for servicing your warrenty may be void.

Most likely OP the bearings are at end of life in the fan motor. It's a common problem on Peugeot 206's, you wouldn't see a lot of this on VW's and certainly not on a 07 but it sounds like it is the problem in your case. Just also check that some other object hasn't been blown up from the road and is caught up in the fan propeller like a bit of plastic or something, but be sure the engine is off and cold before you check for health & safety reasons.

If there is nothing caught up in the fan that is causing the noise and it is unlikely that there is, you can check the fan bearings by checking for play in the bearings by seeing if there is any play in the movement of the fan propeller. Also, the fan could be coming loose and coming into contact with the cowling around it.

Not true OP, you can have your car serviced where you wish.

True but you must use manufacturer approved parts to keep the warranty intact......
