Alloy wheel buckled-repaired-but car still not right?

A few nights ago I hit a pothole at around 40-50 MPH. Had a nagging feeling something was wrong, so called to a tyre shop the next day and had the wheel off for inspection. Sure enough, buckled on the inside-nothing too serious.

Had the wheel repaired today-now didn't actually see the wheel after it was repaired, but had a feel around the inside when I got home and can't detect a buckle.

Still, on the way home, I still felt the car wasn't driving as smooth as I would like-both on and off the motorway-maybe I am being paranoid, but it feels funny.

What else should I get checked (assuming the wheel was repaired)?

    I'd have that wheel rebalanced.

It was balanced after repair. Get it done again anyway?

The crowd that repaired the wheel weren't tyre specialists per se-

Have the wheel alignment checked. when you hit the pothole you could have knocked the steering out slightly. any decent tyre centre will have a laser wheel alignment machine.

    Cheers for the advice.

Got the wheels realigned this afternoon-they were out alright.

Hopefully that's the end of the problem!

If its not the alignment it may be one of the suspension components, hopefully your run in with the famous Irish pothole won't have burst a shock. Keep us posted. :)

    Thanks.

I had the OH take it out for a spin this evening and she says it's fine (or the same as the last time she drove it). It's an unbiased, but somewhat uninformed, opinion, but it will do for now :).

They guy in the tyre centre said that the bushes were worn, but this wasn't caused by the hit (Gerry Campbell didn't think they needed replacing around a month ago).

Now, where's the address for Kildare County Council 'til I send them the bill!

Definately send 'em the bill. I had an alloy buckled badly by a pothole a few years ago. I got a new wheel (wasn't prepared to take risks to save a bob). I photographed the damaged one and sent the bill to the council with details of where it happened. A month or so later, cheque in the post:)

Redsoxfan, when you say its not driving as smooth, is it just like an imbalance or something else?

Alignment can be out and the car will run smooth...I got new tyres on once and was told all wheels were balanced. Drove out on teh m'way and it shook all over the place. Took it staright back and got them re-checked. They said it was out slightly but not enough to cause the issue I was experiencing, but nonetheless, I got them to re-do it.

Guess what, it was ok then.

It's hard to say Lex. An ideal test would be for you to take my GT for a spin and let me know if you sense anything unusual.
