Uncomfortable with Jobs.ie

I'm not usually one of these "I don't trust the interweb" types but last summer I was freelancing in radio and needed a part-time job so I forwarded my CV for a load of crappy call centre jobs via Jobs.ie (including one place that's constantly advertising) and didn't hear a peep. Few weeks later one of them advertised again so I just applied directly and got the job.

A position has come up on Jobs.ie that I'm interested in but I'm wary about applying for it via that website. What's the actual procedure once the application is submitted? How much luck have other people had with Jobs.ie? I'm certainly not suggesting it's a scam or anything :) but I'm just wondering is only a certain number of CVs flagged to the employer or what...?

I'm pretty sure it works something like this -

    1. You apply for a job on the site.
    2. Your CV goes into a pass/fail queue.
    3. A Jobs.ie employee either passes or fails your application.
    4. a. If your application passes, it is automatically forwarded to the employer.
    4. b. If your application fails, it is not forwarded to the employer.
    5. Both pass/fail applications are stored online in the employers account.

This is the way a lot of jobsites work. The idea is it provides added value to the employer as there is a level of screening to remove unsuitable applications/spam.

I used to know Jobs.ie quite well before they were purchased by Irishjobs.ie/Denis O'Brien. They used to be quite ethical. I don't know what they're like now.

Can you not apply directly to the company assuming their contact details are also on the website.

If you haven't seen it already, this thread posted yesterday about a security breach at jobs.ie may interest you: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055264123

It's probably best to contact the employer directly anyway if you've had better results that way!

where i work we use all these sites to recruit, monster, recruit ireland, irish jobs, etc. all the CV's are sent through the site and go directly to us via email. they dont screen them, because if they did it would save us a lot of time. if i advertise a job on monster say, every single CV that is sbmitted will be emailed to me, which usually means getting 100 CV's of which 95 of them will be unsuitable. i can actually log back into monster and see how many people viewed the ad and how many applied.

these sites sell themselves on getting your company applications so it is not in their interst to screen them. if they only sent me the 5 good CV's i would be complaining that that isnt enough. where as sending me 100 CV's looks better for them. so its quantity over quality.

if you have applied for a job through the site it should get to them. if this company advertise all the the time then have a loook around one of the other sites i mentioned becuase the chances are they arent only using jobs.ie and you will find the same job advertised elsewhere.

they are the only ones who do then. and if they are doing it then i wouldnt recomend anyone to be using the site and i think i would be having a chat to them from a company prespective as we dont pay them to decide who does and doesnt apply for our jobs. i would like to know on what basis they decide if someone is or isnt qualified to do the job i have advertsied.

i know with monster and irishjobs.ie you can tick the boxes to a few questions like 'do you require a visa to work in ireland' or 'are you currently a resident in ireland' and things like that. but the person applying just says yes and the CV comes through anyway. i dread monday mornings because everyone from moscow to dubai will have apllied for every job i have advertised over the weekend and i have to go through a few hundred emails of candidates who cant even work in the country, and arent even living here to begin with.

Yeah, you can imagine if the Jobs.ie employee has 1000 CVs to check, her concentration levels may not be so high by CV number 500... I'm sure there are some false negatives during their screening.

i would say by CV 500 they would be on their second bottle of scotch, rocking back and forth in a chair, and eyeing up the loaded revolver pistol on the desk :) you could only read the same CV from xaghjtv wvardimerisyrew in kazikstan so many times before it gets tedious.

    :D Yeah, I agree!

I would imagine on a popular site like Jobs.ie there are many thousand CVs waiting to be screened after the likes of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

as someone who uses these sides from a client perspective and have contacts in irish jobs, recruit, loadzajobs and monster I very deliberately do not use jobs.ie as a source of posting any jobs - due to the fact that the CVs are the least screened out of all the sites ( ie no screening options) - i too know someone who spent a short amount of time with them and moved to another webboard not long after.

there is no fool proof method to screen cvs as you say are candidates are clever - they cvs are only a bit of paper at the end of the day - many candidates not only lie about their location ( ie living in india but can commute to D2!!) ;)or the fact that they have a visa but actually dont even know which government dept gives out visas or the conditions or to lie about the nitty gritty stuff like their salary, their previous experiece , their age and worst of all - the year unaccounted for ( prison, joined the circus , voluntarily joined the dole que )- at the end of the day it is all a minefield - agencys are there to screen cvs as its their job to weed out the genuine candidates from the blatant fantasists

Gotta disagree with that I'm afraid. The last three people I interviewed who came via an agency... total Walter Mitty types. The skills on their CV were false and they didn't have a clue. One of them even used his friends as his referees.

In my experience agencies do not check any of the skills or referees.

hey dublindude im sorry you have bad experience there are a million shoddy recruiters out there but there are good ones too i promise:) - !! they do exist they are however a rarity - i can promise on my life that i have NEVER not screened a candidate and have never put anyone forward for an interview without reference checking them first - however this is the reason i no longer work in the agency sector as being a sales job at the end of the day time and speed doesnt really accomodate these screening options.

And also there is a sad reality that although you can catch most of them you will always get some that slip through the net - you cant catch em all (wink!)

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, the one time I sent an application to Irishjobs.ie, I got a call immediately, so I don't really have a good feeling in my waters about jobs.ie.

Think I'll apply directly. And yeah it is strange that jobs.ie screen - surely that should only be up to the company advertising the position.

it should defintly be up to the company to screen. i dont see what right jobs.ie have to decide whose CV does and doesnt get through to the company advertising the job. it is up to the company to decide who they want to interview. jobs.ie might not even understand the qualifications or experience needed to suit some technical roles so how would they screen these applicants? or you might not have experience in a particular field but you may have a quality the company are looking for. you could be missing out on some excellent oppurtunities by using their site.
