Sorry if this breaks the rules delete if necessary (obviously) but this article just got me thinking: http://blog.epicedits.com/2008/03/28/60-of-photoshop-users-are-pirates/

I promise that anyone who replies to this or votes will not be hanged or prosecuted.

Do you honestly pay for computer software?

I don't. I have never paid for a program in my life and I don't think I ever will.

I've paid for the bulk of it.

I can't think of any software I have that is cracked though, I did have photoshop at one stage but that was long ago and besides, I've no use for it.

I found that when getting cracks or whatever, my computer got riddled with viruses and other crap and the actual sites themselves to be the biggest pain in the arse on the Internet.

I've bought quite a bit of software in the last few months though and I've no problem in doing so, you get what you pay for imo.

I use free software where possible, but if I need to purchase software for a specific task then I do so.

theres no third option for a little from column A a little from column B.

Sins of a Solar Empire just came on the market in January: they put ZERO piracy protection on it. Its a genius business model though because buying the game gets you full customer support and benefit of customer feedback: you say it, they fix it. Havent bought it yet but Id say I will.

I have pirated Photoshop. Anything over $40 I will rarely consider for purchase. Let alone hundreds of dollars. 9/10 programs on my computer are legitimate and/or freeware however.

Well my laptop is my work laptop... so all the software is paid for.

I'm a teacher so I get educational prices for the software and hardware too...

Nintendo DS games are ridiculously overpriced given the content and quality of the games - for example buy COD 4 for the DS and PC (roughly around the same price) and look at the difference - it's like comparing Pac Man to Half Life 2.
I've seen so many kids who have bought games for €50 and they were so bad they just got thrown in the bin - if those games were sold for the PC they'd be worth about a fiver because no-one would buy them.
Which is why I have no issue with buying an R4 - if the games were reasonably priced I would buy them.
Software wise, I'll try the open source option first, Open Office is great considering it's totally free - I even work for a very large company that uses it exclusively instead of MS Office because the licencing is so extortionate.

would pay for some of the software

a lot of kids and students use photoshop, they're hardly going to pay a few hundred bucks for it, would expect companies would pay for it if they used it.

42% of Photoshop installs are legal?! My hairy hole they are.

I'll gladly pay for some software - if it's well-written, as long as it's affordable.
I'll begrudgingly pay for some software - if it's important and there's no better free alternative.
The rest is free/Free software as it's often the best available (Open Office, 7zip, AVG or Avast!, Comodo, Linux ), and kicks commerical competition. I've never had to pay for support, but think that's a better model. The likes of Photoshop, Corel Painter X, etc - I don't use it often enough or rely on it, and it's quite pricey so I simply don't pay for them.

I use the free software if I can, otherwise I just buy the programmes. But I do remember playing commodore 64 games on copied tapes years ago, but at the time I don't think we realised it was pirated! :pac:
