i thought the 17 was a coupe like the 15, scarce anyhow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Think i saw a 15 for sale on carzone, or one of the vintage mags sometime back, the 17 is a scarce as hell though!Have you a 20 in your collection john?Havent seen one for donkeys!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭johnf2020

    Hi Guys,

Yes the 17 is a coupe and there is its twin called the 15, which I have.
The Current line up is 15GTL, 16TS, 18TS, Fuego GTX.
Dont have a 20,,,,,it would be some task to put all the numbers together, but the 17 is the missing one in the current sequence!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

A nice collection of some unusual cars!I wouldnt imagine the 15 was a very common car in this country even when new?

The 15/17 were very rare in the country.
According to Practical Classics about 1 year ago, there were only 8 recorded 15's left in the UK!---SO the number left here must be tiny.
My local Renault dealer said that he only ever sold 1,ever!!!!!!

    and the 17TL type R 1312,17TL type R 1322sunroof,17TS type R1313,17 TS type R 1323sunroof, 17TS type R1317, and the 17TStype R1327sunroof.

I HAVE MY CAR PICS ON PHOTOBUCKET--HOW DO i BRING THEM ACROSS TO HERE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Go to your pics on photobucket, click on the IMG code thats beside them(thats the one for forums, its the fourth one down i think), it will say copied, then go to your boards reply page and click paste and the IMG code should come up, then when you submit your reply your picture should appear in all its glory...it sounds more complicated than it is, i only figured it out last week:)

That 15 looks lovely. Are they the original wheels? Up to now, i've only ever seen them on R5s. Love the R16 too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭johnf2020

tHE WHEELS ARE ACTUALLY FROM A 5 GORDINI/ALPINE TURBO BUT ARE A POPULAR UPGRADE FOR THE 15/17.....tHE LAST CAR THAT THEY WERE ON WAS ALSO A 15 IN THE UK.

Fantastic looking cars john! Was the 15 an isle on man car going by its registration? The 15 looks great with the alloys on, its a pity there isnt more 15s around the place!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭johnf2020

The 15 is actually my favourite of all the cars. Its actually the worst condition wise, but still excellent.
Its a very late phase 2 car from 1979. One previous lady owner with only 33k on the clock and is a nice drive despite being only a 1300cc.
Very little rust at all which is unusual for the 15/17 never mind being a Renault. I paid £1200 stg for it 3 years ago which I consider a bargain and I drove it home from Liverpool without a hitch----I would never sell this car.

The 16TS is pre-facelift 1970 car with only 49000kms on the clock.
It was fully restored in the UK at a cost of--wait for it--£9500 stg.
It has a full leather interior. It is perfect, though its the first car that I" would "sell.

The Fuego is a 1985 2.0L GTX Auto. It has 88000 genuine miles with a full Service history, every MOT etc etc etc, was was owned by A Renault Club Member for most of its life. I bought it on EBAY UK a year ago for £1050 stg.
Its an excellent car in every respect. Probably one of the best unrestored Fuegos available, anywhere.

The 18TS is my most recent find. Again a 1985 2.0L Auto car. I bought this car from a photo. It again has a full Service history, every mot,tax disc etc etc.The car is as new. I decided to buy it as a mechanical parts car for the Fuego---but now I find that it is far too good for that!!!.Best 18 in Ireland,no question.
    I bought the car for
    £200 stg---Yes you read right!!!200

not at all, perfectly sane i reckon!

You got a great deal on the 18, thats what i like about cars that arent"mainstram classics",excellent ones can be picked up for peanuts, i bought my one owner chevette that had 16000mls on it for 1000eu, fair enough it needed paint, but if it was an equvilant escort it would probably have cost 10 times more.

    Hi John,
    Great collection of Renaults.
In the past I have cursed, praised owned all of the above. The Irish 15 & 17's didn't last long. People in general did not take care of the usual items. I can remember a run on springs, exhausts, starters, bottom ball joints. The 18 auto is rare and I only remember working on about 5 Irish ones. Watch the relays on the Autobox they corrode and you will loose a gear. The 16 however is class and looks well in white. The rear blind is nice. I missed one on ebay for my TX.
I would love an eyeball sometime. Send me a PM.
Hmmmm! Looks like there is enough of us to start a Renault club!

The late Gerry Kennedy from Laois who had a huge collection of Fiat 132s and parts used to run a R20 up until a few years ago, its probably still in one of his sheds, his son is selling off the collection thru the 131mirafiori.com site, if you were interested to see if its about.
There was a 30 in Galway for years, haven't seen it in ages though,

Jesus , I didn't know that he was dead:eek:. I worked in Portlaoise for 5 years and I saw him pass every day with the 20 or Fiat with something in tow

John, cars are in lovely condition, well done.

My fav is prob the 18, they were a lovely comfortable car, unfortunately I had to work on them aswell...

Yes thats a terrific collection there, very interesting and lovely to see these cars again after so many years, looking like new !

There was a family in Malahide that used a yellow 15 well into the 1990's, they kept it immaculate and I also remember the foreman of Smiths Garage in Coolock used a lovely metallic blue with tinted glass R17 Fuel Injection again well into the 1990's, a quick car too !

    The Fuego's really dissapeared didn't they !

All of the Renaults of that era were distinctive looking and well equiped cars and I saw several 1970's/80's models alive and well on a recent trip to Spain !

I saw a very clean MK1 white R5 and a navy R18 travelling together near Crusheen, Co Clare on Easter Sunday.

Given the numbers a French one might be better. (including cousins too, my car has a Renault engine)

John I am drooling here! All of your cars are older than me.... but I can remember getting spins in all of them! (my dad is a renault nut!)
I'm in for a Renault club! Just give it a few more weeks..... I'll have the 9 back by then! Ha ha. Seriously though! We should organise a Renault/French meet somewhere! I'd say include all cars up till 1990?
(ps! 9's nearly finished! got 3 GTS alloys on tues!)

The R15 was one of my favourite cars when new. As a boy, I sure got all the brochures from the Renault dealer :)

Good find, alias no.9. Surely a Renault man will snap this up?

Hi mate I have a renault 17 , it has gone under quite a lot of restoration but still needs finishing bits and pieces then painted. It was not my intention to sell the car as i'm keen to see it finished in the next couple of months, but I already have another one so I may listen to offers. Let me know if you are interested .
    thanks Kev.
