I'm thinking about getting the PS3. Just wondering a few things though.

Is it any good? What is the game range like? I'm not really into FPS type games, I sold my xbox 360 cos most the games where FPS type games. I'm interested in the Blu-Ray disc feature, is it any good? Whats the online play like? Is there anything similiar to xbox live arcade?

    Thanks in advance!

Is it any good? That's really an almost impossible question to answer impartially. While one person might sing it's praises another could hate it. Best to do as much reading up on the machine and see if it appeals to you.

I like it myself. While it doesn't have anything approaching the catalogue of games that the 360 has it's getting there. There are some great games out at the moment such as Ratchet & Clank, Unchartered, GT5 Prologue, Oblivion and many more. You also get a high quality Blu-Ray drive and an upscaling DVD player. I like the fact that it ships with wireless controllers by default as well as built-in wireless networking. As mentioned it has a Blu-ray drive but it also supports High Definition audio which is a funky feature.

Online play is patchy at the moment. It works very well with some games such as COD:4 and not so well in other games from what I've read. It isn't anywhere near the stage of XBox Live so don't expect that and you won't be disappointed, however it's free at the moment which is cool.

It has the Playstation Network Store which is similar to Arcade but to be honest it's atrocious at the moment. It's slowly updated and alot of the 'classic' games that they have thus far put up are far from the cream of the crop, but there is potential there.

All in all it's a great gaming machine that is slowly developing, there are great games out at the moment with more on the way. From a hardware aspect it's well featured and serves well as a multimedia hub. It's well worth the investment even just for the Blu-Ray aspect alone.

Its worth it as a Blu Ray player alone, Its one of the cheapest Blu Ray players available and its Blu Ray 2.0 compatible and its constantly updated....

I'm not big into Console gaming and got it mostly as a Entertainment center, It supports DivX / Xvid its upnp compatible too so you can stream music / photos / video over your network, It has built in Wifi

WarHawk is pretty good, and Guitar Hero 3 works great although the online functionality is a bit broken...

And with Games like MGS4, GTA and WipeOut HD coming out, I see myself using it a LOT more

It's an excellent blu ray player. It upscales regular dvd's very well and there are some class games on the way.
The online play really depends on the individual game. I play mostly fps games so I couldn't really tell you about any others.

I'd agree with everything eo980 says. XBox was never an option for me due to a lot of PS2 games, I wanted the BluRay drive etc. Therefore I can't compare it to the online experience of XBox. The games I have, it has played very well, Uncharted was excellent but very short. I enjoyed Resistance as it looked amazing having stepped up from a PS2. Jericho was an interesting take on FPS.
Formula 1 looks great and you really get the perception of speed with some of the camera angles. PES was a disaster, seemingly across all platforms, so I'm getting FIFA instead. CoD4 is amazing, but even shorter than Uncharted. The catalogue is growing all the time. even having bought it at E500, I love it to bits.
The Home feature, hopefully out in a couple of months, should be spectacular as well.

Well unless you have a HDTV and HDMI yor'e not going t notice any difference with Blu ray.Its good but 40Gb can have faulty Disc drives.Oblines good coz its free and theres a store with games and home coming(like second life) with everything the 360 has and more.Oh and try COD4 and your whole perspective of an fps will change as it is possibly the best fps ever created!

I'm guessing that as he already had an XBox360 that he does indeed have a HDTV.

    Well I bought a PS3 yesterday :)
Got a good deal in HMV - console + GT5 Prologue and a game for E54.99 so I picked Need For Speed Pro Street, all that for E409. Haven't had a good play around with it yet but will tonight. So far I'm very impressed :D

I'm in the same boat as the OP and thinking of parting with a few quid for a PS3. I have a fairly decent PC setup so will probably only play the few games which I can't get on PC such as Gran Turismo or Burnout Paradise.

Primarily though I would be getting it for Blu-ray as I have a 42" 1080i Philips TV and a Sony 5.1 player at the moment, which I plan to hook the sound up thru the optical connection. I was wondering though if anybody could tell me what they think of Blu-ray movies on a HD TV. We've all seen the demo HD disks in shops and how amazing they are, but I'd like to know what an actual film looks like on a HD TV, does it actually look like it should?

    In a nutshell, yes.

Id say its worth it, ut3 is on it too, and allows mods. Online is constantly getting better, and they are hinting that it will all become uniform in the future.

It hasnt got the collection of the 360, but with so many games due this year, i cant see anyone having too hard a time finding some decent games.

It depends on the film as to the quality you will get. Some films are quite old and are coming out on bluray, Full metal jacket, clockwork orange etc...

The least you will get on any bluray, is better than an upscaled dvd, even on really old films.

When you get to newer films, filmed with hd in mind, yes, the difference is quite something, almost jawdropping in comparison. 300 for example is amazing looking.

There are sites that will rate the audio (sometimes stero is all thats available for older films) and video of every film, It will help you decide if you will settile for the dvd and let it upscale or pay the extra for the bluray.

This site http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/ tells you about the quality of a hell of a lot of them, and its worth reading the comments, as although some score low, they specifically say its better than the dvd, its just not demo quality (which cant be expected for a lot of films)..

Im impressed so much by it, that i am seriously considering purchasing over 60% of my dvds again in bluray.

I'm thinking about buying a PS3 also but will my old PS2 games work OK on it (actually have some original Playstation games also - how about them)?
Is there any link to compatability or peoples experience would be great....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Backwards compatability is a sore issue here. The 60GB version is fully BC however the 40GB is only PS1 BC as that only required software emulation, not a chip.

I have read somewhere that there is talk that PS2 software emulation is not far off but it is all just rumours at this stage.

Try Ebay for a 60GB version or some shops may sell them second hand but I don't you'll find them tbh.

Allegedly the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle will come with a backwards compatible 80GB model. The catch however is having to wait until sometime in June.

Can I ask something about the ps3?
Have a 360 for a while now but am seriously considering trading it for the ps3.

Anyway what I want to know is does the ps3 play avi`s,mpegs etc from external sources like the 360 does now??
I use a 500gb external drive for movies etc and hook it up to the 360 usb port and watch my converted ;) movies that way.

    Thanks

    Richie.
