"Green" Broadband

'Green' Logic would suggest that the roll-out of broadband is essential.

    1. A recent article would suggest it may make financial sense, and possibly benefit the climate, for the ESB to roll-out a FTTH network, provide good competition for eircom and UPC, and deploy world class energy management technologies, all at the same time.

    2. Additional 'Green' broadband benefits supporting FTTH are argued for by the New Zealand Institute, such as Teleworking etc., in addition to other more mundane economic benefits.

    3. The 'Green' sustainable environment issue is one more of the positive arguments being addressed by the roll-out of FTTH. Those arguments apply in the Irish context too.

It is argued internationally that there is a need for every country, even the US, to have a clear and visionary National Broadband Policy.

I guess the question is, given that the Government established a department with responsibility for both energy and communications policy, will we see an integrated and forward looking 'Green Broadband' policy vision emerge from the work recently done by that department?

Not with our greens...they are too busy diverting money from communications into toilet paper folding competitions and scamming other "green"-ish things.
All the while condoning massive funds transfers into private bank accounts.
Yay go green, you'll feel pretty green from the sellout.

    FTTH ?
The Govt could have legleslatated for this for all new homes, even if it was dark fiber back to a cabinet on the estate. Then many customers would have a choice apart from Eircom copper.

Actually when NTL tried to roll out FTTH before eircom offered ADSL they were told to roll out digital TV instead. DIgital TV hasn't made a lot of money for NTL because most of the money gets handed over to SKY, Setanta & co.

ESB have a fibre backbone and could just put WiFi on poles, the units could possibly be powered inductively with a fibre link back to the substation

Dept of Finance have saved €49m because of the ROS website. It would be nice to see that going into to fund rural BB
