Probloem with 400d long exposures....

When I take a fairly long exposure eg. 5 seconds, once the shutter has opened for 5 seconds, it closes and spends another ~5 seconds writing to the disk. A thirty second exposure is the worst. For about thirty seconds afterwards I can't do anything with the camera as it is "busy".

Does this happen to anyone elses 400d?

Isn't that the noise reduction thing in custom functions?

It does sound a little long, but don't forget that when you have the sensor open for so long, the processor then has to put all that information together and generate a file from it.

Your experience may actually be normal.

'tis yeah.... why? Is that the cause of the long wait after the exp?

I thinks thats the 'dark slide' noise reduction doozy. It takes another exposure with the shutter closed of exactly the same duration and then uses this shot as a map for hot pixels and bits of the image affected by noise and the like. It then uses this in some clever digital fashion to reduce the noise on the original shot.

It really is a pain in the arse. Are you sure this is normal for an SLR?

My mate has a 40d and as far as I know it doesn't happen on his....

    What does RTFM mean??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

It's off by default ... isn't it?

RTFM = Read The Manual.

Long exposure photos generally do take longer to write to the memory card, since there is more data to process before writing.

    Read the manual :p
if you dont know any of these forum saying google em thats what i do
You can turn it off if you want but it is just improving your long exp image quaility

Someone asked the same question as you on another forum Click

you have to bare in mind your mates 40D is better than your cam so the image processor is probably quicker at doing these things on the forum i linked you to it says
Just a note, even with noise reduction on, the 30D, 5D, and 1DMkIIN will save instantly and display the result (assuming review is on).

    on the XTI it doenst.

I know yea, but a 30 second exposure shouldn't take 30 seconds to write. The photos are only about 3mb!

But they need to take another 30 seconds to read the amount of noise or something to try and reduce it

Invest in a faster CF card. They're pretty cheap these days.

If the camera takes the exact same amount of time in the long exposure and after its for sure the Noise reduction ON in the custom menu.

I have a 40D and it happens the same because that feature is On so I'm pretty sure its that, if you had a slower CF card it would be more random times...

    Yo

I sorted it out, it was the Noise reduction.

If I was to turn the NR off, can I use any programs like photoshop to reduce noise? Would it be as good as the in-camera Nr?
